Rose Goodluck-Jones

FORT DEFIANCE — Rosary recitation and funeral mass for Rose Goodluck-Jones, 83, of Fort Defiance, were held Aug. 8 at Our Lady of the Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church in Fort Defiance. Interment followed at the private family plot in Lupton, Arizona.

Beloved mother and matriarch, Rose was born Feb. 27, 1940, in Lupton, into the Naakai Dine’é (Mexican Clan), born for Honágháahnii (One-walks-around Clan). She passed away peacefully Aug. 1, 2023, in Albuquerque, surrounded by family members. She was a longtime resident of Fort Defiance.

Rose graduated from the historic Chilocco Indian School in Newkirk, Oklahoma, and Riverside Indian School in Anadarko, Oklahoma, earning a bachelor’s in 2005 from the University of New Mexico.

Rose was a gifted seamstress, an avid collector of Navajo history literature, and enjoyed civic engagement. Her knowledgeable influence will live on in those whose lives she touched.

Rose is survived by her daughters, Tomiko L. Chamberlain of Kansas City, Missouri; Dr. Rachelle G. Jones and Roqueeta R. Jones of Fort Defiance; Tomika R. Wauneka and Perphina L. Solis of Albuquerque; and 12 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Rose is preceded in death by her husband of 52 years, Harry Jerry Jones; daughter, Kandy Goodluck-Jones; and granddaughter, Angel Ray Shorty.

Pallbearers were LeDaren Jones, Nicholas Solis, Triston Sage, Gabriel Solis, Kristopher Charley, and LeMond Morris.

Honorary pallbearers were Dr. Rachelle Jones, Herman Charley, Grant Shorty, Derek Chamberlain, Christopher Martinez, and Reginald Chamberlain.

Kris Tabaha

ST. MICHAELS, Ariz. — Funeral services for Kris Tabaha, 44, of Fort Defiance, were held Aug. 8 at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in St. Michaels, Arizona, with Dan Stevens officiating. Interment followed at the Fort Defiance community cemetery.

Kris was born Oct. 14, 1978, in Keams Canyon, Arizona, into the Naaneesht’ézhi Tábąąhá (Water’s Edge Clan), born for Hashk’ąą Hadzohí (Yucca Fruit-Strung-Out-In-A-Line Clan). He passed away Aug. 3, 2023, in Fort Defiance.
Kris attended Winslow High School, Navajo Community College and Central New Mexico Community College for electrical engineering. He was employed with the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers. He enjoyed riding horses, bull riding, and traveling.

Kris is survived by his wife, Shannon Tullie; son, Kevin Tabaha; daughter, Kensey Henderson; mother, Mary Mae Tabaha; brothers, Jamie Tabaha and Dallas Tabaha; sisters, Christine Tabaha and Shirleen Tabaha; and granddaughter, Nora Henderson.

Kris is preceded in death by his father, Herman James Tabaha.

Pallbearers were Jamie Tabaha, Dallas Tabaha, Wilson Barney Jr., Spencer Henderson, and Reuben Selestewa.

Honorary pallbearers were Kevin Tabaha, Flavian Tabaha and Elmer Begay.

BLACK MOUNTAIN, Ariz. — Funeral services for Fritz Jay Wartz, 44, of Black Mountain, Arizona, will be held today, Aug. 10, at 10 a.m., at the Black Mountain Mission Church with Daniel Smiley officiating. Burial will follow at the family plot in Black Mountain.

Fritz was born Sept. 18, 1978, in Fort Defiance, into the Tó’aheedlíinii (Water Flow Together Clan), born for Tódích’íi’nii (Bitter Water Clan). His nalí is Kiyaa’áanii (Towering House); cheii is ‘Áshįįhí (Salt People). He passed away July 28, 2023, in Flagstaff.

Fritz attended Chinle High School and was employed as a construction laborer with Ignace Brothers Commercial Construction, Inc., in Flagstaff.

As a boy, Fritz loved being outside with his grandmother’s livestock. He learned how to tame horses in the Chinle community and enjoyed traveling and working hard.

Fritz was recently baptized and attended Flagstaff Mission Tabernacle. He loved being sociable with everybody he came into contact with, especially with the people he loved.

Fritz always carried a great sense of humor and greeted everyone with warm hugs and leaving them with laughs and smiles. He did not have a whole lot but was always humble with what he had.

In his quiet time, Fritz loved studying his bible, singing, and free-hand drawing. All around he was a good person we will miss.

Fritz is survived by his parents, Adellafena Smiley and Francis K. Wartz; brothers, Adrian Smiley, Brandon Whitesinger and Bryant Whitesinger; sisters, Daphne Whitesinger and Natasha Whitesinger; niece, Tessa Smiley; and nephews, Ellison Whitesinger and Anakyn Whitesinger.

Fritz is preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Betty Brown and Kee Wilson Begay; paternal grandparents, Annie and Kee Chee Wartz; and great-grandmother, Ason.

Pallbearers will be Brandon Whitesinger, Bryant Whitesinger, Eric Whitesinger, Sheldon Tsosie, Tyriss Tallman, and Johnny Gorman.

Honorary pallbearers will be Adrian Smiley, Michael Smiley, Edison Whitesinger, and Tyrone Lee.

A reception will take place at the late Betty Brown residence in Black Mountain following services.

Brandon M. Slim

SAN CARLOS, Ariz. — Funeral services for Brandon Michael Slim, 35, of Peridot, Arizona, will be held Friday, Aug. 11, at 6 a.m., at the Slim residence (8000 Old Winkleman Road) in San Carlos, Arizona, with Pastor Ralph Holmes officiating. Burial will follow at the Peridot National Cemetery.

Brandon was born Feb. 3, 1988, in Phoenix, into the Tis’Ton’Aiyeh (Apache), born for Dziłtł’ahnii (Mountain Cove Clan). His nalí is Tse’binisti’e (Apache); cheii is Kiyaa’áanii (Towering House). He passed away Aug. 1, 2023, in Peridot.

Brandon attended Tsé Ho Tso Unified School from 2nd to 8th grade, Window Rock High School from 9th to 11th grade, Albuquerque Job Corps, and graduated from SIATech Charter High School in 2008. He enlisted in the U.S. Army and was awarded the National Defense Service Medal and Army Service Ribbon. He was employed as an aircraft powerplant repairman.

Brandon is survived by his companion, Stacey Goseyun; daughter, Haylee Marie Slim; parents, Carol and Delbert Slim; brother, Dallas Slim; sisters, Shayna Slim, Cheryn Salter, Cayla Steele, and Christina Dazen; and grandmother, Elaine Harlan of Crownpoint.

Brandon is preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Riley and Leah Steele; and paternal grandfather, Edison Harlan Sr.

Pallbearers will be Dallas Slim, Clifton Milford, Toriano Martinez, Adriano Steele, Colin Boni, John Steele, Elbert Polk Jr., Elijah Burdette, Colby Dillon, Raphael Ramos, Sam Kozie, Jason Cutter, and Scott Steele.

Courtney Little

RIO RANCHO, N.M. — A Celebration of Life for Courtney Little, also known as Kourts, was held May 15, 2023, in Rio Rancho, New Mexico.

Courtney was born in Fort Defiance. She passed away May 10, 2023, in Rio Rancho.

Courtney attended Window Rock High School and later pursued higher education at Collins College in Arizona and ITT in New Mexico. She had several managerial positions at Subway, Blaze Pizza, and worked as a seasonal employee for Amazon.

Outside of work, Courtney had many hobbies that brought her joy. She loved fishing, spending time outdoors with her dogs, camping, attending concerts, and cherishing her tattoos were among her favorite activities.

Courtney was a fun-loving and outgoing young lady who had a great sense of humor. She always enjoyed joking around and having the last word. She was also known for her protective nature towards her family and friends, always having their backs.

Courtney’s love for her family and friends was evident in the time she spent with them, creating lasting memories. Her vibrant spirit and presence will be deeply missed, and she will forever remain in our hearts until we reunite.

Courtney is survived by her parents, Toni and Randy Collins; brothers, Kyle Jensen, Anthony Collins, Blaine Nez, Gabriel Little, and Jake Little; and several nieces, nephews, cousins, maternal grandparents, and paternal grandmother.

Courtney is preceded in death by her brother, Eric Little; uncle, Robert Jensen; grandfather, Keith Little; and several cousins.

Sean R. Damon

GALLUP — Funeral services for Sean Ryan Damon, 21, of Thoreau, New Mexico, were held Aug. 5 at Rollie Mortuary in Gallup, with Rev. Curtis Lengefeld officiating. Interment followed in Thoreau.

Sean was born Aug. 30, 2001, in Crownpoint, into the Tó baazhní’ázhí (Two Who Came To the Water Clan), born for Tsi’naajinii (Black Streak Wood People Clan). He passed away July 27, 2023, in Iyanbito, New Mexico.

Sean graduated from Thoreau High School.Sean is survived by his mother, Renee Damon of Thoreau; and sisters, Brittany Damon of Gallup, and Cherish Acunia of Flagstaff.

Sean is preceded in death by his father, Hubert Damon; and brother, Cordan Damon.

Lucy attended Gallup High School and graduated from the General Education and Training Incorporation in professional diesel truck driving in Kansas City, Missouri, and became a certified computer technician from the Arizona Institute of Business.

Lucy loved fishing, reading mystery novels, and had unlimited abilities in arts and crafts.

Lucy is survived by her husband, Donald L. Wilson; sons, Floyd Castillo, Rex Castillo and Derald Wilson; daughters, Rosetta M. Yazzie, Cathy Castillo, Amanda Castillo-Richards, and DeAnna Wilson-Marviglia; sister, Emma Mase; and 34 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren.

Harry graduated from the University of Arizona and was employed with Freeport-McMoRan in Bagdad. He enjoyed coaching, softball, bowling, basketball, hunting, golfing, drumming, DJing, fishing, and traveling.

Harry is survived by his wife, Michelle Curley; daughter, Priscilla Curley; and brothers, Larry Curley, Perry Curley, Jerry Curley, Terry Curley, and Garry Curley.

Eugene was born Feb. 17, 1956, in Fort Defiance, into the Yé’ii dine’é Táchii’nii (Giant People/Red Running Into the Water People Clan), born for Jemez Pueblo. He passed away Aug. 10, 2023, in Fort Defiance.

Eugene attended Window Rock High School, Eastern Arizona College, Navajo Community College, Northern Arizona University, and Fort Lewis College. He retired from Navajo Nation Water Development after 33 years and seven months of service.

Eugene participated in football, cross country, track and field, basketball, and running marathons. He also enjoyed hunting, fishing, bible study, automotive mechanics, and was a member of the Blue Spirit Drill Team.

Eugene is survived by his brothers, Lawrence Watson and Tom Watson Jr.; and sister, Pauline Watson Enfield.

Eugene is preceded in death by Robert L. Watson, Tom Watson Sr., Margaret Bia Watson, Hazel M. Watson-Quintana, Edward Quintana, Duane Quintana, Kimberly Watson, and Christine Watson.

Beverly Becenti-Pigman

KAYENTA — Funeral services for Beverly Becenti-Pigman, 79, of Kayenta, will be held Saturday, Aug. 19, at 10 a.m., at the LDS Church in Kayenta, with Bishop Luna officiating. Burial will follow in Kayenta.

Beverly was born Jan. 26, 1944, in Tohatchi, New Mexico, into the Tábąąhá (Water’s Edge Clan), born for Kiyaa’áanii (Towering House Clan). Her nálí is Tsénjíkiní (Honey Combed Rock People); cheii is Tódích’íi’nii (Bitter Water). She passed away Aug. 12, 2023, in Maricopa, Arizona.

Beverly was one of the founders, as well as board member and chairperson, for the Navajo Nation Human Research Review Board and Indian Health Service Institutional Review Board. She had numerous amounts of training with the review boards, human services department, and social services.

Beverly enjoyed doing crossword puzzles, spending time with her family, and watching movies and her favorite TV show “Gunsmoke.”

Beverly is survived by her husband, Joe L. Pigman; son, Kelly L. Pigman; daughters, Robbie Harwood, Jo M. Dandy and Rayann Borbon; sisters, Virginia Yazzie and Sandra Lewis; and 17 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

Beverly is preceded in death by her parents, Ella and Wilson Becenti; brothers, Victor Becenti and Johnny Becenti; and sister, Winifred Watson.

Pallbearers will be Rayden Toledo, Seth Toledo, Austin Hall, Kameron Tsosie, Geovanni Shea, and Daniel Rodriguez.

Chester A. Baldwin

CHINLE — Funeral services for Chester A. Baldwin, 69, of Flat Rock, Arizona, were held Aug. 16 at Our Lady of Fatima Church in Chinle.

Chester was born May 21, 1954, in Ganado, Arizona. He passed away Aug. 9, 2023, in Chinle.

Chester graduated from Saint Catherine’s Indian School in Santa Fe in 1972 and was the owner of B & B Ranch in Flat Rock, where he was a producer for Native American beef. He also taught Diné College students the care and treatment of cattle.

Chester enjoyed playing his guitar, rounding up cattle, and loved rodeos, steer wrestling and team roping.

Chester is survived by his wife, Patralina Begay; sons, Chancellor Upshaw, Victor, Ervin, Delfred Baldwin, and Arlando Teller; daughters, Tina Baldwin, RJ and Vikki Baldwin, and Andrea Nobel; and brothers, Bobby Baldwin, Floyd Baldwin and Walter Baldwin.

Chester is preceded in death by his parents, Sybil and Gordon Baldwin Sr.; and Gordon Baldwin Jr., Julia Baldwin and Irvin J. Baldwin Sr.

TSE BONITO, N.M. — Memorial service date for David Jacob Nez, 35, of Window Rock, is pending. Location will be at the Silver Creek Mortuary in Tse Bonito, New Mexico. Burial will follow in Fort Defiance.

David was born Jan. 14, 1988, in Fort Defiance, into the Tsénjíkiní (Honey Combed Rock People Clan), born for San Ildefonso Pueblo. He passed away July 24, 2023, in Phoenix.

David attended Phoenix High School and was employed at various construction sites and restaurants. He enjoyed cooking, mechanics, outdoor activities, working with his hands, building things, and working on technical gadgets.

David is survived by his son, Jacoben Nez; daughters, Layela Nez, Delilah Nez and Jasmine Nez; parents, Michelle Cheromiah and Daniel Nez Jr.; brother, Mathew Nez; sisters, Heather Nez and Hilary Nez; maternal grandmother, Ileen Kline; and paternal grandparents, Gertrude and Daniel Nez Sr.

David is preceded in death by his brother, Daniel Nez III; and maternal grandfather, Kenneth Cheromiah.

Danny attended Window Rock High School and some college where he was on the Honor Roll Society. He worked as a journeyman for the Navajo Tribal Utility Authority, NAPA Auto Parts, and Navajo Nation Transit.

Danny enjoyed working on vehicles and his tractor, hauling wood, going to the casino, and spending time with his grandchildren.

Danny is survived by his daughters, Marsha Carl, Kalene Carl and Stacey Carl; mother, Elvina Carl; brothers, Kee Carl Jr. and David Carl; sister, Sandra Carl Black; and six grandchildren.

Danny is preceded in death by his wife, Josephine Carl; brother, Timothy Carl; father, Kee Carl Sr.; and grandmother, Zonnie Billiman.

Pallbearers will be Trey Denetso, Tariq Denetso, Schuyler Begay, Corey Begay, Randall Black, and Samuel Black.

David Gatewood

EASTOVER, N.C. — David Gatewood, 87, passed away Aug. 9, 2023, in Eastover, North Carolina. He was born March 16, 1936, in Fort Defiance, into the Dibéłzhíní (Black Sheep Clan), born for Tł’ááshchí’í (Red Bottom People Clan).

David Gatewood, March 16, 1936 – Aug. 9, 2023

David graduated in 1955 from Ganado Mission School in Ganado, Arizona, and shortly after joined the Army 82nd Airborne Division in Fort Bragg, North Carolina. He followed a family tradition of his “paratrooper” brothers who also attended Ganado Mission School.

As an Army veteran, David devoted 22 years of service to his country, as a paratrooper, Special Forces Division, and parachute rigger. He was stationed abroad in Japan and served in the Vietnam War. He is the recipient of several medals and decorations, including the Bronze Medal, Master Parachutist badge, National Defense Service Medal, and Commendation Medal.
In his retirement life, David remained with his family in Fayetteville, North Carolina, and worked for MJ Soffe for an additional 25 years.

David met the love of his life, Matilda Neilsen, at Ganado Mission School. They were blessed with 64 years of marriage and three children.

Family life continued for David in Fayetteville, near Fort Bragg Army Base, where he was stationed. Apart from his busy Army career and family life, he was an active member in the Westminster Presbyterian Church worship services and participated in the Men’s Breakfast and choir.

David is survived by his daughters, Joni G. Hooten and Terri G. Long (husband Norvell); brothers, Virgil and Richard Gatewood; sister, Mary Alice Abeita; and eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

David is preceded in death by his wife, Matilda (Tillie); son, Peder Neil; parents, Martha and George Gatewood Sr.; sister, Mary Ann Dodge; and brothers, George (Jack), Clarence, Henry (Buddy), Malcolm Dalton, and Robert Emerson.

Memorial services and celebration of David’s life are pending.

David J. Nez

TSE BONITO, N.M. — Memorial service for David Jacob Nez, 35, of Window Rock, will be held Friday, Aug. 25, at 10 a.m, at the Silver Creek Mortuary in Tse Bonito, New Mexico, with Father Blaine Grein officiating. Burial will follow in Fort Defiance.

David was born Jan. 14, 1988, in Fort Defiance, into the Tsénjíkiní (Honey Combed Rock People Clan), born for San Ildefonso Pueblo. He passed away July 24, 2023, in Phoenix.

David attended Phoenix High School and was employed at various construction sites and restaurants. He enjoyed cooking, mechanics, outdoor activities, working with his hands, building things, and working on technical gadgets.

David is survived by his son, Jacoben Nez; daughters, Layela Nez, Delilah Nez and Jasmine Nez; parents, Michelle Cheromiah and Daniel Nez Jr.; brother, Mathew Nez; sisters, Heather Nez and Hilary Nez; maternal grandmother, Ileen Kline; and paternal grandparents, Gertrude and Daniel Nez Sr.

David is preceded in death by his brother, Daniel Nez III; and maternal grandfather, Kenneth Cheromiah.

Pallbearers will be Daniel Nez Jr. and Danny Nez.

Ann was born Nov. 5, 1933, at her homesite in Sawmill, Arizona, into the Tó’áhaní (Near the Water Clan), born for Tódích’íi’nii (Bitter Water Clan). She peacefully passed away Aug. 27, 2023, in Fort Defiance, surrounded by her loved ones.

Ann was the matriarch of her family and one of the oldest living members of the Sawmill community. She married her husband, Charlie Kee Lee, and gave birth to six children. She was not only a mother to her own family, but a mother and grandmother to countless other children, adopting more throughout the years.

Ann was a woman of great courage, willpower, faith, love, and amazing ability for resilience. She lost her mother at the age of 9 and her father at the age of 13. She was then raised by her brothers and was the only female and last surviving child.

Ann attended Sawmill Day School, St. Michael Indian School, and the Albuquerque Indian School. Finishing her education at 6th grade she then moved to a vocational school in Barstow, California, where she worked as a house cleaner and waitress.

Ann returned to Sawmill in a tale of great perseverance to become a wife, mother to all, sheepherder, and agricultural farmer. She harvested her fields, butchered her sheep to feed countless people, and tied the hair at many kinaaldá. Her legacy continues in those women and children.

Ann is survived by her children, Phillip Wauneka, Nora Lee, Norman Lee, Norbert Lee, and Norma Lee; and 19 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren.

Ann is preceded in death by her parents, Nibaah’ and Jim Tsosie; brothers, Sam Tsosie, Naswood Tsosie, David Tsosie Sr., Richard Tsosie, and John Jay Tsosie Sr.; husband, Charlie Kee Lee; daughter, Mildred Lee; son, Charlie Lee Jr.; and three grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be Fernando Tilden, Philander Wauneka, Jamesen Ahasteen, Joel Herbert, Anthony Tsosie, and Sharon Tsinnijinnie.

Honorary pallbearers will be Phillip Wauneka, Norman Lee, and Larry Tsosie.

Theodore was employed as a construction laborer.

Helen had no formal education but worked as a food prep and dishwasher in the restaurant industry. She was a lifetime rancher of horses, cattle and sheep. She had a great love for horses and enjoyed horseback riding, sewing, weaving rugs, silversmith work, making Navajo dolls, and clay sculpting horses.

Helen is survived by her son, Frank G. Spencer of Tse’Lichii; daughters, Nellie Todd of Yucca Valley, California; Irene S. Franklin of Twin Lakes, New Mexico; Priscilla Plummer of Rio Rancho, New Mexico; Marsella Plummer of Santa Fe; and Sadie Spencer, Evelyn Plummer and Cornelia Plummer, all of Tse’Lichii; and 39 grandchildren, 66 great-grandchildren and 19 great-great-grandchildren.

Beverly L. Briggs

AULT, Colo. — Beverly Lane (Hotaling) Briggs, 85, passed away Sept. 3, 2023. She was born in Ault, Colorado, in the spring of 1938.

Beverly graduated from Ault High School where she was involved with school and community activities. Before she met her husband-to-be, she attended Colorado A&M (CSU).

In January of 1959, Beverly married James Clyde Briggs of Holyoke, Colorado. Throughout their years together, they lived in Colorado, Nebraska, Wyoming, and Arizona.

From 1987-1993, Beverley and James lived in Ganado, Piñon, and Rock Point, Arizona, where James was a school administrator and Beverly was active in the local communities.

Beverly was an avid high-scoring bowler, as well as a well-traveled naturalist. She hiked the Grand Canyon multiple times during her retirement years and was active in elections as a poll worker for over 50 years in five different states.

After the loss of James in the fall of 2019, Beverly became more focused on spending time with her growing family. Her family grieves her loss, but they take comfort knowing that James and Beverly are together again.

Beverly is survived by her five children, including Patricia, who lives in St. Michaels, Arizona; and 11 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Beverly is preceded in death by her husband James, parents, brother, and sisters.

Kee is survived by his children, Ortega Wauneka, Patsy Wauneka, Michael Wauneka, and Kim Wauneka; siblings, Bobby W., Mary T., Alice S., Edison W., Joann W., Caroline T., Ida B., Wilson W., and Johnny W; and 15 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

Margaret earned an associate’s degree in education and retired from Wingate Elementary School as an educational technician after 42 years of service. She was also a former Church Rock Chapter House official.

Margaret enjoyed family trips, watching her favorite TV shows and quality time with her family.

Margaret is survived by her sons, Max Chischilly Jr., Ernest Chischilly, Melvin Chischilly, and Marvin Chischilly; daughters, Maxine Chischilly, Della Chischilly, Marnita Chischilly, and Lavern Sanchez; sister, Marie Benally; and 16 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.

Grace was born Jan. 21, 1959, into the Tł’ízí łání (Many Goats Clan), born for Nát’oh Dine’é Táchii’nii (Tobacco People Clan). Her maternal grandfather is Mą’ii Deeshgiizhinii (Coyote Pass) and paternal grandfather is Kinyaa’áanii (Towering House). She passed away Sept. 14, 2023, in Phoenix.

Grace attended Kinlichee Boarding School, Greasewood Boarding School, and graduated from Snowflake Union High School in 1978. She played basketball for Murray State, volleyball for Haskell Junior College, and attended Fort Lewis College in Durango.

Grace enjoyed gardening, baking, and cooking traditional Diné foods. She loved learning and teaching about our Diné culture. She will be remembered as a compassionate, friendly, and kind person.

Grace is survived by her husband, Thomas Tracy; daughters, Tiffany and Samantha Tracy; son, Keough Tracy; sisters, Betty Hoover, Julia Yazzie, Peggy Begay, and Selena Duran; brothers, Dale, Nelson, Gilbert, and Leslie Gonnie; and two grandchildren.

Following the service, a gathering of relatives and close friends was held at the home of Peggy Gonnie Begay in Tsin Diłhxił Sikaad, at the Gonnie family homestead.

Lucy was a lifelong sheepherder, wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend. She married Kee Begay and together they had 10 children.

Lucy loved taking care of her sheep daily and enjoyed weaving traditional Navajo rugs. She was an excellent cook and loved spending time with her family and many grandchildren. She was also an active church member.

Lucy is survived by her daughters, Holly Holyan, Annie Begay, Loretta Begay, and Rose Johnson; sons, Tommy Begay and Roy Begay; and over 131 grandchildren.

Lucy is preceded in death by her husband, Kee Begay; parents, Willie and Cora Lapahie; siblings, Harrison Sr., Johnson, and Sarah; and children, Benjamin, Henderson, Helen, and Lorrena.

Cheryl attended Wingate High School and enjoyed cooking, long walks, and spending time with her family and friends.

Benbarty attended Mariano Lake Elementary School, Bernalillo Middle School, and Wingate High School. He enjoyed going to concerts, riding horses, singing karaoke with his sister, building horse corrals, and fishing with his brother.

CROWNPOINT — Funeral services for Rev. Robert Robinson Jr., 81, of Crownpoint, will be held Saturday, Sept. 30, at 10 a.m., at the St. Paul Catholic Church in Crownpoint, with Deacon Sherman Manuelito officiating. Burial will follow at the Santa Fe National Cemetery (pending).

Rev. Robinson was born Jan. 3, 1942, in Phoenix. He was of the Muscogee Creek Nation, Choctaw, and African American. He passed away Sept. 8, 2023, in Albuquerque.

Rev. Robinson attended Phoenix Union High School and Oklahoma State College in Wilburton, Oklahoma. He served in the U.S. Army for seven years as a paramedic and worked in the burn unit at Cedar Sinai Hospital in Los Angeles.

Rev. Robinson worked at various other jobs and was president of the Native American Senior Association under Phoenix Native Health and manager of an apartment complex for Native American seniors under Native American Connection in Phoenix. He retired in 2010.

Rev. Robinson had great love for gardening and enjoyed listening to Native American/oldies music, singing, fishing, cooking, watching sports, and was an Arizona Cardinals fan.

Rev. Robinson is survived by his wife, Kathrynn Arviso-Robinson; sons, Randy Robinson, Gregory Robinson and Tim Robinson; stepsons, Donovan Silversmith, Kristopher Wilson and Kevin Wilson; daughter, Kim Robinson; stepdaughter, Dawn Silversmith; brothers, Bataan Robinson and Choski Robinson; sisters, Encaly

Roykins and Ellen Robinson; and six grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Darryl graduated from Gallup High School and received an associate’s degree from ITT Technical Institute. He was most recently employed by Tradesmen International.

Darryl was a loyal Dallas Cowboys football fan and loved to cook. He enjoyed cycling and would ride different trails and routes. Some days he would bike up to 50 miles at a time.

Darryl is survived by his parents, David and Darlene Smith of Iyanbito; and brothers, Ervin (Cecilia) Smith of Albuquerque, and Jeff (Colleen) Gilpin of Missouri Valley, Iowa.

Darryl is preceded in death by his daughter, Suzette; son, Adrian; and sister, Pamela Longhair.

Galena was one of the first graduates of St. Michael Indian School in 1950. She then attended two years of college in Fort Wayne, Indiana.

Galena was employed with the Bureau of Indian Affairs and retired as an education placement specialist. She loved to cattle ranch with her husband at family ranches at Coyote Springs and Sunrise Springs.

Galena is survived by her sons, Frank T. Dineyazhe II, Derrick Dineyazhe and Myron Dineyazhe; daughters, Gayle Dine’ Chacon, Cynthia Dineyazhe and Andrea Yazzie; brothers, Howard Tsosie, Louis Denetsosie, Steven Tsosie, and Michael Benally; sister, Loretta Wood; and 20 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.

Peter attended Northern Arizona University and was employed as an activities coordinator with the Office of Diné Youth. He enjoyed sports, reading, watching movies, and crossword puzzles.

Eugene received an associate degree from the Institute of American Indian Arts in Santa Fe and was employed with the Navajo Nation Department of Labor Relations for 41 years.

Eugene practiced many forms of art: painting, drawing, and silversmithing. He enjoyed reading, traveling, and was an avid fan of the Arizona Diamondbacks baseball team.

Eugene is survived by his daughters, Jeanelle Dupree, Janilee Spotted Horse, Amber Kirk, Eugenia Hall, and Cheryl Harvey; brother, Lorenzo Kirk; and 11 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren.

Eugene is preceded in death by his parents, Edward and Helen Kirk; and siblings, Carol, Sadie, Terry Sr., and Nina.

Ryan was a construction and cement mason worker for over 25 years. He enjoyed spending time with family, taking leisurely walks with his family, was a jack-of-all-trades, and was a lifelong lambherder to his grandbabies.

Ryan was also a gambling man and was known to be the most excellent chef, especially his jalapeño poppers, seafood crab boils, and “papa beans.”

Ryan is survived by his wife, Roxanna Tom; daughter, Deedra Cadman; stepson, Kyle Manuelito; sister, Cyrillie Damon; father, Dennis Cadman Jr.; maternal uncle, Tulian Brown; paternal uncles, Eugene Belone and Cornell Etcitty; paternal aunts, Elizabeth Bradshaw, Bernae Etcitty, Christine Beach, and Misty Begay; and two grandchildren.

Donald enjoyed reading the bible, drawing, painting, and outdoor activities.

Steve was born March 4, 1949, to Marion and Kathryn “Kay” (Harrigan) Getzwiller in Benson, Arizona. He quietly left this world on Aug. 23, 2023. He left it a more beautiful place, working over his career to elevate the artistry of Navajo weavings and those who created them.

Steve was the fourth generation of his family to grow up in the ranching life of southeastern Arizona. As a kid he often hung around the Amerind Foundation in Dragoon, a museum and research center for Native American arts and culture and was inspired to study anthropology at the University of Arizona.

Steve moved to Sonoita in 2000 where he started the Nizhoni Ranch Gallery. His truck was his office on four wheels, crisscrossing the Navajo Nation often without a paved road or map but going on instinct.

For more than 50 years, Steve worked closely with weavers, not just by selling their pieces, but so much more. For 30 years straight, he was on the reservation every month to see weavers, talk about rugs and their needs. They were like family.

“There’s definitely mutual respect,” Steve once said, describing their collaborative relationships “as business partner and friend.”

Steve was dearly loved by all and the legacy he left behind speaks for all those lives he touched.

Steve is survived by his wife, Gail; daughter, Jamie Hellems (James); son, Sean Getzwiller (Aspyn); sister, Darby Getzwiller; brother, Joe Getzwiller; stepbrother, Bill Getzwiller; stepsister, Billie Turrieta; and four grandchildren.

Steve is preceded in death by his parents.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the nonprofit, Forever Navajo Inc., promoting Navajo weaving.

Jon D. Colvin

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. — Jon David Colvin passed away Sept. 25, 2023, in Scottsdale, Arizona. He was born Oct. 15, 1942.

Jon attended schools in the Denver area and graduated from the University of Denver in 1964 with a degree in finance.

Following graduation and while serving in Volunteers in Service to America, Jon was based in Crownpoint, where he engaged in community development. He later moved to Chinle, where he continued the same activity.

In 1971, Jon contributed to the creation of Dineh Cooperatives, Incorporated, a self-help nonprofit organization that was heavily involved in developing and/or improving the commercial, industrial, health care, housing, and public safety sectors of the Chinle region. He was serving as president and chief executive office of DCI when he died.

Jon is preceded in death by his parents, Leland and Yolande (McCaskill) Colvin.

Cadman was born June 6, 1944, in Gallup, into the Tódích’íi’nii (Bitter Water Clan), born for Kiyaa’áanii (Towering House Clan). He passed away Oct. 4, 2023, in Albuquerque.

Cadman finished the eighth grade at Intermountain Indian School in Brigham City, Utah, and later became an independent contractor. He was a hard-working, wise, and knowledgeable person.

Cadman often provided sound advice and taught his “brothers” how to work in masonry or carpentry. He was known for his black hair fixed in a fancy pompadour.

Like many Diné children, Cadman grew up on tortillas and potatoes. He was a self-taught guitar picker and was known to sing a tune.

As a young person, Cadman was a Golden Gloves Boxer. He loved his wife, children, and grandchildren.

Cadman is survived by his wife, Amelia Cadman; daughter, Cyrillie Damon; mother, Ella Tommy Belone; brothers, Cornell Edsitty and Eugene Belone; sisters, Elizabeth Bradshaw, Dolores Givens, Christine E. Beach, and Berné Hanson; and one grandchild and two great-grandchildren.

Cadman is preceded in death by his son, Ryan Dean Cadman; wife, Vivian Cadman; father, Dennison Cadman Sr.; sister, Alberta Edsitty Grubbs; paternal grandfather, William Tommy Sr.; and maternal grandmother, Lillian Ross Mescal.

Benjamin graduated from Navajo Prep in Farmington, followed by a few years at Arizona State University in Tempe, Arizona. He then joined the U.S. Marine Corps and was honorably discharged.

Benjamin began his career by working for Pittsburgh and Midway Coal Mine where he retired in 2003. During retirement, he enjoyed hunting, fishing, traveling, working on his tractor, and helped raise his grandson.

Benjamin is survived by his son, Dr. David Wilson; daughters, Tina Bowen, Sandra Sorrell, Robin Sorrell, Gwen Sorrell, and Tamara Sorrell; sisters, Billie Artichoker and Victoria Sorrell; and nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Steve Getzwiller

GALLUP — A memorial service for Steve Getzwiller, 74, will be held Saturday, Oct. 28, at 1 p.m., at the El Rancho Hotel in Gallup.

Steve was born March 4, 1949, to Marion and Kathryn “Kay” (Harrigan) Getzwiller in Benson, Arizona. He quietly left this world on Aug. 23, 2023. He left it a more beautiful place, working over his career to elevate the artistry of Navajo weavings and those who created them.

Steve was the fourth generation of his family to grow up in the ranching life of southeastern Arizona. As a kid he often hung around the Amerind Foundation in Dragoon, a museum and research center for Native American arts and culture and was inspired to study anthropology at the University of Arizona.

Steve moved to Sonoita in 2000 where he started the Nizhoni Ranch Gallery. His truck was his office on four wheels, crisscrossing the Navajo Nation often without a paved road or map but going on instinct.

For more than 50 years, Steve worked closely with weavers, not just by selling their pieces, but so much more. For 30 years straight, he was on the reservation every month to see weavers, talk about rugs and their needs. They were like family.

“There’s definitely mutual respect,” Steve once said, describing their collaborative relationships “as business partner and friend.”

Steve was dearly loved by all and the legacy he left behind speaks for all those lives he touched.

Steve is survived by his wife, Gail; daughter, Jamie Hellems (James); son, Sean Getzwiller (Aspyn); sister, Darby Getzwiller; brother, Joe Getzwiller; stepbrother, Bill Getzwiller; stepsister, Billie Turrieta; and four grandchildren.

Steve is preceded in death by his parents.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the nonprofit, Forever Navajo Inc., promoting Navajo weaving.

Richard loved working for his community and family.

Lilly never went to school. She herded sheep because her parents were afraid to lose her if she went to school.

Lilly was a true Diné Asdzáá, homemaker, rancher of the land, and a rug weaver in the era of no running water and electricity. She often traveled by horse and wagon to provide for her family.

Lilly enjoyed sewing traditional outfits and blankets, trips to flea markets, visiting family and friends, picking piñons, storytelling, and volunteered to provide food for many church events and occasions. She also sheared, carded, and dyed wool for others.

Lilly is survived by her sons, Paul Chief and Kee Y. Chief; daughters, Carol T. Grass and Roberta Boswell; brother, Daniel Benally Sr.; and 26 grandchildren, 72 great-grandchildren and 11 great-great-grandchildren.

Lilly is preceded in death by her husband, Nephi Chief; sons, Billy Chief and Jack Chief; mother, Vera Kescoli Etsitty; father, Blackhat’s Son Amos Etsitty Benally; brother, Kee Benally; and sisters, Laura Etsitty and Linda Yazzie.

Tom was a rancher, cattle owner, and mechanic. He enjoyed carpentry, hunting, and riding horses.

Tom is survived by his sons, Thomas Billiman Jr., Leon Billiman, Tyrone Billiman, and Cody Jay Billiman; daughters, Cynthia A. Shortey, Mona Lisa Billiman and Carmelita Billiman-James; sisters, Elvina Carl and Vida Kenny; and 21 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.

Vicki enjoyed reading, visiting with friends and family, taking evening walks, and caring for her pets and livestock. She loved talking to and about her grandchildren and dedicated her life to Navajo range improvement.

Geraldine earned a bachelor’s degree in elementary education from the University of New Mexico and a master’s degree in education from Cambridge College in Boston, Massachusetts. She was an early childhood teacher for 30-plus years teaching preschool, kindergarten, and first grade at Fort Wingate Elementary School, Chooshgai Community School, Baca Community School, and several Head Start and FACE (Family and Child Education) programs across the Navajo Nation. She received many certifications and accolades for her dedication to Navajo youth and their education.

Geraldine was a seamstress often making Navajo skirts, tops, ribbon shirts, quilts, potholders, and more. She loved crafting and keeping family records. Family was her greatest joy, especially spending time with the young ones.

Geraldine is survived by her son, Tony Hale; daughters, Sherri Hale, April Hale, Janelle Hale, and Sheena Hale; brother, Raymond King; sisters, Bernice Willie, Beatrice Johnson, Eleanor Duffy, and Victoria Mitchell; and 10 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Geraldine is preceded in death by her mother, Minnie Enrike; father, Woody King; brothers, Ambrose King Sr., James Smith Sr. and Leonard King; and sisters, Cora K. Endito, Evelyn King, Matilda Yazzie, and Lorraine Keevama.

Johnson completed school through the 8th grade and was employed with the National Park Service, retiring in 1992 after 28 years of service. He also worked for Santa Fe Railroad and Pacific Railroad.

Johnson is survived by his son, Jonathan Hunter; daughters, Jacqueline Hunter, Victoria Chee, Veronica Hunter, Violet Hunter, and LaVina Hunter; and 33 grandchildren, 66 great-grandchildren and 7 great-great-grandchildren.

Colleen, beloved mother, daughter, and friend passed away Oct. 26, 2023. She was born June 3, 1949, in Detroit, Michigan, to her mother, Jovita Tolksdorf, from a ranch in Montana, and her father, Barney Keane, who was from rural Ireland.

Colleen had a lifelong dedication to working with Indigenous rights and advocacy. Since 1973, she worked with Native communities throughout the Southwest, including the Navajo Nation, Acoma Pueblo, Santo Domingo Pueblo, Salt River-Pima Maricopa, and the Los Angeles Indian Center as a radio and television producer, grant writer, social worker, and teacher.

During the 10 years preceding her death, Colleen was a journalist for the Navajo Times reporting on stories ranging from historical to contemporary issues. During the 1970s, she directed educational programs to implement the Indian Child Welfare Act in an effort to reunite Native American children with their families and tribes while teaching broadcast journalism at the Alamo Navajo and Rock Point community schools in Arizona and New Mexico.

In 1987, Colleen wrote, produced, and directed the award-winning film “The River That Harms”, an investigative study of the largest radioactive wastewater spill in U.S. history that had taken place on Navajo land.

Colleen is the author of “Crashing an American Wake – ‘an Irishman’s tale of loss, struggle, war, the American dream and promise fulfilled’”, a book published in 2021 on the life and times of her Irish father Barney and the history of Ireland.

Colleen’s parting words were “Go n-ardoidlh an bothar suas chun bualadh leat’ — May the road rise up to greet you!”

Colleen held two master’s degrees, one in social work from Arizona State University and another in broadcast journalism from the University of Southern California.

Collen is survived by her daughter, Joanna Keane Lopez of Albuquerque; and her cats, Choo Choo and Chi Chi.

Daniel worked in construction, carpentry, ranching, and silversmithing. His favorite pastime was to sit outside his home in the sun listening to KTNN while watching his goats and sheep graze.

Daniel loved to try new foods and visit his grandchildren in neighboring cities. He took great pride in his grandchildren and would participate in Navajo song and dances with them. People would see him dancing at the local state fair and at fairs in Shiprock and Window Rock. He also had good times at the casinos and enjoyed watching World Wrestling Entertainment.

Daniel is survived by his daughters, Rose Piaso and Grace Piaso; brother, Nelson Piaso; sister, Virginia “Gene” Piaso; and eight grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

Daniel is preceded in death by his wife, Virginia Piaso; daughters, Ruth Piaso and Bealuh Piaso; grandchildren, Aaron Johnson and Eli Platero; and great-grandchild, Kayleah Johnson.

Aaron was lead guitar and vocals for a country/blues/rock band. He enjoyed collecting and building classic cars and trucks, and teaching his children to cook, grill, silversmith, forge knives, and ride horses.

Aaron is survived by his ex-wife, Kendall Rae Ramirez; sons, Alonzo John, Colt John and Ace John; daughter, Sabrina John; parents, Elsie and Alfred John Sr.; brothers, Alfred John Jr., Arvis John and Alfredo John; sisters, Sharmarie Roanhorse, Alfreta John, Alselena John, and Almaria John; and one grandchild.

Freddie worked in maintenance at Speedy Truck Stop and was Lupton Chapter vice president in 1987, Lupton Chapter grazing officer from 2005 to 2013 and Lupton Chapter vice president from 2013 to 2017. He enjoyed sandpainting, painting pottery and was a Dallas Cowboys fan.

Freddie is survived by his son, Ricky Murphy; daughters, Marlene Vallo, Arlene Yazzie and Patricia Molina; and 14 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Bruce enjoyed golfing and was also a volunteer firefighter, ham radio operator and radio technician.

ST. MICHAELS, Ariz. — Anselma Josephine Mitchell, 62, of St. Michaels, Arizona, passed away Nov. 3, 2023, in Denver. She was born Oct. 19, 1961.

Anselma graduated from St. Michael Indian School and attended Bacone College in Muskogee, Oklahoma. She was employed as an intake specialist assisting Native communities at the Denver Indian Center for 20-plus years.

Anselma also worked in street maintenance with the Denver City and County. She enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren.

Anselma is survived by her son, Brandon Howell; daughter, Kristin Howell; brothers, Donavon Mitchell, Henry Lewis, Garrett Mitchell, Ted Mitchell, and Floyd Mitchell; sisters, Susie Mitchell, Jennifer Mitchell, Geneva Mitchell, and Laureen Mitchell; and four grandchildren.

COPPERMINE, Ariz. — Louise Jane Nez, 78, of Coppermine, Arizona, was born in May 1945 in Page, Arizona, to Myrtle Bessie Begay-Nez and James Nez. Louise’s maternal grandparents are Arthur and Leona Begay; and paternal grandparents are Andrew and Zonnie Woody.

Louise grew up on the Navajo Reservation, near Coppermine. She herded sheep and helped her parents care for her four brothers and three sisters.

Louise attended Tuba City Boarding School as a child, Page High School and Intermountain High School in Brigham City, Utah. She worked as a stenographer in Cudahy, California, and as a computer programmer at Aerospace Corporation in El Segundo, California. She also worked in retail sales at Grand Canyon National Park.

Louise loved singing gospel songs, watching the TMC movie channel and listening to her favorite music. She liked to sew for her family, crochet, bead jewelry, and cook for her family. She was an avid reader of astronomy, history, religion, biographies, and short stories.

Louise attended the local Pentecostal Church and held a strong faith to God all of her life. She prayed and read her bible daily. She wanted her family to believe and hold on to the spirit of faith.

Louise is survived by her husband, Patrick Lopez; daughters, Cina M. McBride of Seattle, Washington, and Jayla A. Muhlhauser of Grays Harbor, Washington; and four grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren.

ST. MICHAELS, Ariz. — Funeral services for George Yazzie, 85, of Fort Defiance, will be held today, Feb. 1, at 10 a.m., at the Mary, Mother of Mankind Catholic Church in St. Michaels, Arizona, with Rev. Peter Short officiating. Burial will follow at the Fort Defiance cemetery.

George was born Oct. 14, 1938, in Fort Defiance, into the Táchii’nii (Red Running Into the Water People Clan), born for ‘Áshįįhí (Salt People Clan). He passed away Jan. 27, 2024, in Chandler, Arizona.

George worked for the Window Rock School District as a bus driver, Navajo Nation Food Distribution as a truck driver, and P&M Mine as a heavy equipment operator.

George loved basketball and coached the Blue Canyon Mountaineers. In his later years, he enjoyed watching his grandchildren play sports, watching the Phoenix Suns, and relaxing on his porch doing word search while enjoying his front yard view.

George is survived by his wife, Inez Mose Yazzie; sons, Marvin Yazzie, Michael Yazzie Sr. and Harold Yazzie; daughters, Maureen Sanderson and Patricia Dineyazhe; brothers, Harry Yazzie and Jerry Yazzie; sisters, Ruth Bradley, Glenda Manson, Lena Denny, and Minnie Plummer; and 18 grandchildren and 31 great-grandchildren.

George is preceded in death by his mother, Mary Yazzie; father, Joe K. Yazzie; brothers, Kee Richard Yazzie, Glenn Richard Yazzie and Larry Yazzie; and sister, Elizabeth Yazzie.

Pallbearers will be Kevin Sanderson, Myron Yazzie, Marlin Yazzie, Jayson Wilson, Jared Brown, Armando Atcitty, Alexis Dineyazhe, and Derrick Descheeny.

Raymond Bill Becenti, July 15, 1930 – Jan. 26, 2024

Raymond was born July 15, 1930, in Rehoboth, New Mexico, into the Tó’aheedlíinii (Water Flow Together Clan), born for Ta’neeszahnii (Tangle Clan). He passed away Jan. 26, 2024, in Continental Divide, New Mexico.

Raymond is originally from Becenti, New Mexico, but lived in Continental Divide. He graduated with high school honors at Albuquerque Indian School in 1953.

Raymond worked as a Navajo Nation Police officer for the Shiprock and Fort Defiance Districts, and as a bailiff and sergeant-of-arms for the Navajo Nation Chairman Paul Jones and Vice Chairman Scott Preston administration. He also worked with the Navajo Nation Tax Department in Window Rock and as an operator for Navajo Nation Food Distribution in Fort Defiance.

Raymond was a rancher all his life, assisting and teaching family with ranch round-ups. He loved watching his grandchildren participate in sports and was a football fan enthusiast who enjoyed watching his favorite team, the Denver Broncos, play.

As a young man, Raymond was an active rodeo cowboy participating in bull riding, bronc riding, and steer wrestling with Indian Rodeo Association. His all-time favorite rodeos were in Flagstaff.

Raymond is survived by his daughters, Rowena J. Becenti (Eddie Dimalanta), Bernadette J. Becenti (Largo), and Carolynne J. Becenti; sisters, Wilhelmina B. Nelson of Fort Defiance, and Arlene Tolino of Crownpoint; and four grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Raymond is preceded in death by his son, Ray Ramone Becenti; parents, Little Billie and Mary Arviso Becenti; brothers, Cecil Becenti, Sam Becenti, Bob Bill Becenti, Tom Bill Becenti, and Johnnie Becenti; sisters, June Becenti, Alice Willeto and Emma Sage; and grandparents, Willeto and Yil-Ha-Nas-Bah Arviso.

Pallbearers were Corwin R. Largo, Darwyn C. Largo, Nathaniel R. Tolino, Dylan Tolino, Mathias Milford, and Lefondo Becenti.

Kenneth James

CHINLE — Funeral services for Kenneth James, 31, of Chinle, were held Jan. 31 at the Chinle Catholic Church with Father Blane officiating. Burial followed the service.

Kenneth was born Oct. 9, 1992, in Chinle, into the Tótsohnii (Big Water Clan), born for Tábąąhá (Water’s Edge Clan). He passed away Jan. 21, 2024, in Phoenix.

Kenneth attended Chinle High School and graduated with the class of 2010. He enjoyed spending time with his family, helping those in need, drawing, reading, writing, running, and loved making people laugh.

Kenneth is survived by his brothers, Kendrick James, Christopher James, Tristan James, and Trevor James; and sister, Tasha James.

Kenneth is preceded in death by his father, Travis James.

Pallbearers were Zane Spencer, McKay Spencer, Kendrick James, Kyle Henderson, and Matthew Werito.

TUBA CITY — Funeral services for Delores Schmalle, 94, will be held Friday, Feb. 2, at 10 a.m., at Black Falls Bible Church. Burial will follow at the Natoni area family plot.

Delores was born into the Hashk’ąą hadzohí (Yucca Fruit-Strung-Out-In-A-Line Clan), born for Kinyaa’áanii (Towering House Clan). She passed away peacefully in her sleep on Jan. 28, 2024.

“Grandma Cheii” as she was known by her great-grandchildren was a homemaker that devoted her life to taking care of her family.

Delores is survived by her sister, Dr. Louva Dahozy; son, Harvey Schmallie; and daughter, Irene John (Harrison).

Delores is preceded in death by her husband, Hubert Schmallie; parents, Navajo Joe Judge and Adzan Joe McCabe; brother, Denny Joe McCabe; sons, Leonard Schmallie, Tony, and a baby boy; and grandsons, Emery John and Verdus Schmallie.

Rose was born Aug. 1, 1924, in Ganado, Arizona, into the Tódích’íi’nii (Bitter Water Clan), born for Mą’ii deeshgiizhinii (Coyote Pass Clan). She passed away Jan. 27, 2024, in Ganado.

Rose attended high school at Santa Fe Indian Boarding School and worked for Sage Memorial Hospital where she retired.

Rose is survived by her sons, Gary Benally, Jerrison Benally, Kenneth Lee, and Jefferson Lee.

Rose is preceded in death by her husband, Phillip H. Dale; and son, Jerrold Benally.

Samantha is preceded in death by her brother, Emmanuel King.

David graduated from Albuquerque Indian School in 1960 and excelled in football, basketball, and track. He worked in civil services for the U.S. government at Fort Wingate schools for 51 years.

David enjoyed rodeos, working with children, watching sports, attending traditional functions, and was a fan of the Dallas Cowboys and Wingate Bears.

David is survived by his wife, Darlene Tolino Smith; son, Ervin Smith; brothers, Phillip Smith, Delbert Smith and Rodger Smith; sisters, Evelyn Bartlett, Priscilla Smith, Virginia Smith, Anna Rose Smith, Roseanne Maestas, Delores Smith, Cheryl Smith, and Gloria Sam; and four grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

David is preceded in death by his parents, Anita and Claude Smith Sr.; and brothers, Freddy Smith and Claude Smith Jr.; daughter, Pamala Longhair; and son, Darryl Smith.

WIDE RUINS, Ariz. — A Native American Church farewell journey service for Paul Lee Sr., 85, of Wide Ruins, Arizona, will be held today, Feb. 8, at 10 a.m., in Wide Ruins, with Albert Yazzie officiating.

Paul was born Sept. 26, 1938, in Ganado, Arizona, into the Tábąąhá (Water’s Edge Clan), born for Kinłichíi’nii (Red House People Clan). He passed away Jan. 18, 2024, in Wide Ruins.

Paul retired from the VA Hospital in Reno, Nevada, and was also employed with the Army at Fort Ord in California, and with the National Guard in Reno. He was a member of the Native American Church and enjoyed his little family and grandchildren.

Paul is survived by his son, Paul Lee Jr.; daughter, Crystal Lee; and seven grandchildren.

Paul is preceded in death by his mother, Mabel Lee; brothers, Jimmy Lee and Billy Lee; and sisters, Betty Lee and Lorraine Lee Jones.

Pallbearers will be Ronnie Lee Jr., Sharon Lee, Neal Johnson, Leonard Jones, Domenic Kee Jr., and Fernando Navajo.

Honorary pallbearers will be Paul Lee Jr., Crystal Lee, Cloud Hernandez, Alfred Jones, Lorenzo Jones, and Leonard Jones.
