Richard Beyal Jr.

Richard Beyal Jr., 94, of Church Rock, New Mexico, died peacefully on March 5, 2022, at Presbyterian Hospital in Albuquerque. He was born Feb. 23, 1928, in Lake Valley, New Mexico.

He was Táchii’nii (Red Running Into the Water People Clan), born for Honágáahnii (One-Walks-Around Clan).

His grandfather was Hosteen Beyal, from whom he got his last name, who was a famous medicine man of the Eastern Agency. True to his origins, Richard was a fluent Diné speaker and could sing all night at Ni’daa’s.

His father was Dick Beyal Sr., a two-term Navajo Nation Council delegate for Nageezi Chapter. His mother was Bizdibah Jim (aka Louise Jim) of Lake Valley Chapter.

He met our mother, the late Elizabeth Beyal, at Fort Wingate Boarding School. Her maiden name was Benally and she was from Fort Defiance, Arizona. They were shy kids and were forced to pair off to dance at a school event. They married in 1952 in Phoenix.

They had their first son, Dominic, in 1952 in Fort Defiance. They relocated to Los Angeles where they had their second son, Duane, in 1956. They moved to Church Rock Village east of Gallup and had their daughters Diane and Debra. Then they had a third son, Daryl.

All his life he was an athlete and a pretty good one. Starting with the Shush, he played football and basketball and ran track. He was a boxer and often pummeled speed bags with practiced skill. He was a good basketball player with the famed Window Rock Lodgers and a proud fan of Gallup High Bengals sports teams.

Up until his advanced years, he competed in long distance races in the over-50 category. He always won a ribbon, medal or trophy at these running events held throughout the Arizona, New Mexico and Navajo Nation region.

Using his excellent Diné language skills, for many years he was a radio announcer for KGAK and later KYVA, both in Gallup.

As a young man and until he was halfway through his life, he struggled with alcohol. However, in 1995, he decided to quit and never touched it again.

Our family lived in Church Rock since the early days when our father served as manager. Through the years, he was also a coach for the girls’ softball teams and for Little League, Babe Ruth and Connie Mack youth baseball teams.

Often, we bounced and jostled along with him as he drove the long dirt roads of the Eastern Agency. He knew all the roads and all the hogans along the way. Each time we stopped, to be introduced to an uncle, aunt or other elderly relative, we had to eat. The families we visited always insisted we stay awhile and eat, so we did. Those roads were long and twisting and led to far off vistas and hills and canyons. Along the way, he sometimes sang in the old way of horse riders singing along the trail.

Because of his problems and issues earlier in life, as an elder he possessed a peacefulness and contentment. The way his life went, instead of being bitter or angry, he was warm and outgoing. He could get along with anyone. He showed this at the end, in the hospital, when he was flown to Albuquerque at the end of February from Gallup Indian Medical Center. From his hospital bed, he talked, joked and laughed with the doctors and nurses. Everyone liked him. He spent a week until March 5 in bed at the hospital.

He waited to leave us until we all had the chance to say our goodbyes. When the last of us, Daryl, said his last words to Dad, he seemed to say, OK, this has lasted long enough. He simply stopped breathing, and his spirit soared above us into the mists of time and remembrance.

He is survived by his sons, Dominic, Duane and Daryl Beyal; daughters Diana and Debra Beyal; brothers Andy and Andrew Beyale; sister Magdaline Beyale; 17 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

The Beyal family thanks all relatives and friends who expressed condolences during this time.

Don had a strong sense of generosity and responsibility for one’s family and community. One summer he and his brothers built a hogan for their mother at their family’s mountain land.

One of Don’s love languages was acts of service, and he gave 150% of himself, even to small tasks. He loved to cook for people and enjoyed large gatherings with friends and family.

In 2018, he visited the East Coast for the first time, where he enjoyed seeing Lady Liberty and reenacting “The Butch” scene from “Lady and the Tramp” while eating spaghetti and a giant meatball at an Italian restaurant in Brooklyn.

Don’s family members share his appreciation for the outdoors. Some of his favorite areas to hike were Dibé Nstaa, Chuska Mountains, Colorado trail, and the Sangre de Cristo Mountains. Some of his joys were visiting Pagosa Hot Springs, eating chile stew and bread at Pueblo feast days, and learning about other cultures.

Don will be dearly missed by his friends at the River Church and his extended family and colleagues.

Don is lovingly remembered by his wife, Esther; daughters, Ruthie, Sierra, Chamisa, and Santana; mother, Evelyn; and siblings, June (Chloe and Zhoni), Nolan (Mitchell and Marshall), Duane (Joseph and Ruben), and Lionel.

Corie Moran Adakai (Dec. 25, 1943 — April 24, 2022)

Corie Moran Adakai

ALBUQUERQUE — Corie Moran “Kookum” Adakai, a genuine and beautiful person, was an enrolled member of the Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa Indians of North Dakota. Born in Williston, North Dakota, on Dec. 25, 1943, to William (Buffalo) Moran and Mary Jane Allard, she was raised in Trenton, North Dakota. She began her journey into the spirit world on April 24, 2022, at her home in (Paradise Hills) Albuquerque.

Excellent, charming, forthcoming, always laughing, always making other people comfortable and welcomed, excellent mother, excellent planner, organizer and coordinator, excellent facilitator, full of information, always in demand to facilitate small or large wellness conferences, and most of all, an excellent companion of 59 years. In the next seven months, companionship and marriage would have been 60 years.

Corie was educated in Williston and Trenton, and Flandreau Indian Boarding School, South Dakota, where she graduated with honors. She relocated from North Dakota to New Mexico/Arizona in 1961 where she was accepted to study nursing in Albuquerque. She continued to study at the Indian Health Service in Fort Defiance and graduated as valedictorian of her nursing class in Albuquerque.

Corie met her husband, Frank Adakai, who was working as a Navajo Police officer in Fort Defiance, in 1961. Corie and Frank married on Dec. 22, 1962, in Thermopolis, Wyoming, and have three children, Kurt David, Jaylene (Cookie), and Kevin Wade.

During the 59 years of marriage, Corie and the children moved about 12 times, along with Frank, who was following his occupation in the criminal justice system.

During the 37.5 years, Frank, Corie and the family resided on the Navajo Reservation in Tuba City, Chinle, Many Farms, Window Rock, and lived on the Mescalero Apache Reservation in Mescalero, New Mexico; Shoshone Arapahoe Reservation in Fort Washakie, Wyoming; Red Lake Ojibwa Reservation in Red Lake, Minnesota; and the Rosebud Sioux Reservation in Mission, South Dakota.

They also resided in Washington, D.C., central office of Criminal Justice for one year before Frank was reassigned to the Albuquerque Regional Office. Corie and Frank moved back to Albuquerque, in 1985 and purchased their home in Paradise Hills.

Corie was a seasoned and excellent conference facilitator. She was well-known throughout the U.S. and Canada with facilitator skills. She traveled out of Albuquerque and was a facilitator in demand. She was a facilitator in the field of wellness (mental, emotional, physical, and spiritual), grieving, Gathering of Native American, team and trust building, to name a few of many topics she facilitated.

During the many years, the name Corie Moran Adakai became a household name throughout the country. Organizations sponsoring a small or large conference were requesting for her to facilitate at their conference. She traveled almost every week to do her facilitating where requested. She would always tell her friends she could run in her Stiletto high heels through the airport and each time she always made her flight.

In her years in Albuquerque, Corie was elected and appointed to serve on the board of directors as secretary for First Nation Health Source and director of the Native American Indian Village at the New Mexico State Fair for 10 years. This yearly event was for 17 days. She was an excellent planner, organizer, and coordinator. She assured and sensed the importance of furtherance of all tribal culture and traditions. She staged different tribal dance groups who performed, as well as the annual competition powwow and Navajo song and dance.

Today, the people attend the annual New Mexico State Fair and miss how the Indian Village used to be coordinated. Being a people person, dignitaries like the New Mexico State Fair Board of Directors and the executive director, and Governor Bruce King and his wife took a liking to Corie. Governor King, every year, would invite Corie and Frank to the governor’s mansion in Santa Fe.

Proactivity and prevention being the underlying theme, Corie was the co-founder, co-planner, co-organizer, and co-coordinator of the New Year’s Eve Sobriety Powwow. This powwow was founded based on New Year’s being the deadliest period for vehicle crashes. The powwow started as a one-day event but later became a two-day event. We enjoyed having about 2,000 people come and attend the powwow. The New Year’s Sobriety Powwow was planned, organized, and coordinated for 15 years.

Corie was the co-founder, co-planner, co-organizer, and co-coordinator of the annual Wellness/Healing Skills Conference, which was held for 12 years in Rio Rancho, New Mexico. The three-and-a-half day wellness conference was founded based on assisting people in learning how to maintain a healthy lifestyle. Corie made sure the facilitators for the conference were all Native professionals who were well-qualified and held educational credentials. The conference was attended by councilors, social service, police officers, and behavioral health professionals. In addition, other community people were invited and attended the conference. The conference awarded 21 hours of Continuing Education Units, sanctioned by the state of New Mexico Credentialing Board. This conference was one of the first to add PTSD to its curriculum. It was found out the military, upon discharging a veteran, did not follow through nor offered any type of continued counseling. The veterans were never really desensitized.

All in all, everything comes to an end. Everyone will experience advancement in age and become an elder. People will also experience health problems prohibiting and limiting things they use to do in life. Corie was no exception. Her main complaint was, “People say the Golden Age is the best part of our lives. People lie, Golden Age gives you grief, as you become very limited and health problems become very imminent.”

In past years, Corie was initiated into the Midewiwin Ceremony on the Roseau River Band of Ojibwa in Manitoba, Canada. Every year, for the past 25 years, Frank drove her from Albuquerque to Roseau River Reserve, Manitoba, Canada. Corie saw the importance of furthering in upholding the Ojibwa ceremony, culture, traditions and songs.

Corie was praised, honored, blessed, and sent on her journey through the Midewiwin Ojibwa western doorway ceremony. The ceremony was beautifully done by Laura Horton, Jill Mackin, Barbara Cameron, and Patricia Moore traveling from Manitoba Canada and Montana.

Our beautiful and cherished Corie will be going home to Trenton, where her ashes will be released on her homeland, as this was her wish for Frank, her true love, to take her home.

Corie is survived by her husband, Frank Adakai of Albuquerque; children, Kurt David of Albuquerque, Jaylene (Cookie) and husband Mike of Rio Rancho, and Kevin Wade of Santa Fe; sister, Virginia (Ginger) Thomas of Belcourt, North Dakota; and four grandchildren and three great-grandsons.

Corie is preceded in death by her father, William (Buffalo) Moran; mother, Mary Jane Woody; brother, Duane Moran; and sisters, Louise Allard and Mabel Moran Turcotte.

David Fanman III

David Fanman III

CANTON, Okla. – Funeral services for David Fanman III, 32, were held on May 19. A traditional wake was held on May 18. Burial was at the Cantonment Cemetery in Canton, Oklahoma. Pastor Gerald Panana officiated.

He was born on Dec. 15, 1989, to David Fanman Jr. and Lorraine B. Fanman.

He was born and raised in Fort Defiance. To his family and those close to him, he was known as “Beano.” Beano was born the day his late father retired from the U.S. Marine Corps and, from then on, his dad raised him while his mom was always working.

His Cheyenne name is “Mahisvehohis” meaning “The chief who carried the arrow first.” He was named after his grandpa, David “Gunsmoke” Fanman Sr.

Fanman was born into Under His Cover Clan and born for Cheyenne. His maternal grandfather is Bitter Water Clan, and his paternal grandfather is Cheyenne.

David Fanman III came from a long line of chiefs from both paternal grandparents. From his paternal grandmother’s side, he is the grandson of Chief Redmoon and Chief Jacob Allrunner, the first known “Little Boy Chief ” of the Cheyenne people. On his paternal grandfather’s side, he is a great-great-great-grandson of Chief Tallbull, the last chief of the Cheyenne Dog Soldiers.

His paternal grandfather, David Fanman Sr., was selected by the Arapaho people to be their chief. His late father, David Fanman Jr., was a Cheyenne Peace Chief. Beano was next in line to be the hereditary Cheyenne chief and his relatives close to him awaited the day he accepted his seat to be chief. He represented the chief society at dances and other social events when there were no chiefs present.

Beano attended Window Rock Public School District, where he was an advanced placement student on the honor roll. He was a natural born athlete where he excelled in football and baseball, as well as off-season in basketball. Beano played varsity starting in his freshman year to his senior year of high school. He lettered in football as he played quarterback and lettered in baseball where he was a pitcher.

In school, he was the peer who volunteered to help fundraise for class events and got his dad to be the football booster club president to raise money for the football team. Beano was smart in math and was known for his ability to do work in his head. Just like any Fanman that attended Window Rock, the teachers were excited to have him in class and being a help in the classroom. Beano volunteered on weekends to help his class officers raise money for their class gifts.

As a Fanman, he was known for his story telling, which was a distraction to his teachers to forget the time and that day him and his classmates got an extension on their assignments.

He was known by his peers for his humor, his contagious laugher, his kindness, his friendship, his big smile, and his towering height at Window Rock High School.

After high school, he went on to Yavapai Community College, where he went to school for a year. Being in college is when Beano decided to join the brotherhood of “the few, the proud” the Marines. He joined the Marines following the footsteps of late father. He enlisted in the Marines May 7, 2012, and left May 6, 2016. The medals that he received include the Marine Corps good conduct medal, National defense service medal, Global war on terrorism service medal, sea service deployment ribbon, certificate of appreciation, and expert rifle qualification badge. He was deployed to Kuwait for a year. His last duty assignment was with 3rd Marine Wing Air Wing. He served in the communication Squadron 38 Bravo Company transmissions platoon, in which he was an 0623, a tropospheric multichannel equipment operator. He was a satellite and radio operator.

He was honorably discharged from the Marines ranking as a corporal. Within the time he spent in the Marines, he wrote to his dad and family. Beano came from a military family from his grandfathers, his dad and he continued the tradition of being a military man. He carried himself as a Marine living up to the motto of Semper Fidelis.

He spent his time traveling across the U.S. with the family jewelry business to different powwows and visiting family. He also played in the California pool league and was a sub player for Slopshot Billiards. He enjoyed his time in Monument Valley with his cousins planting the garden at Narrow Canyon. He loved to be in the red dirt herding sheep and riding horses, which he was able to ride bareback.

He would always help where he was needed for relatives because that was how his late father taught him. He always enjoyed the company of his nieces and nephews because he was a big kid at heart. Beano always gourd danced when he came home to Oklahoma to be among his people. Whenever Beano saw a grandma or grandpa needing help in public, he would go out of his way to help them. He was a gentle giant who was always willing to help.

David “Beano” Fanman III is survived by his mother, Lorraine B. Fanman; older sister, Sarah M. Fanman; and younger brother Carlos L. Gloria. He is survived by his aunts, uncles, cousins, various nieces, nephews and grandmas, who all loved him.

He was preceded in death by his father, David “ Beans” Fanman Jr., his maternal grandparents, Seth T. Bigman Sr. and Helen H. Bigman of Monument Valley, Utah; his paternal grandparents, David “Gunsmoke” Fanman Sr. and Annie M. Fanman of Fonda, Oklahoma; aunt Janice Fanman, uncles, Malcom Fanman, Kingsley Fanman and James Fanman and cousin, Russel Fanman.

Lorene P. Hersey

Lorene P. Hersey

FRUITLAND, N.M. – Our precious mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, Lorene Phyllis Hersey, passed on and into the arms of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, the morning of May 27, 2022, surrounded by her loving family.

A celebration of life was held on Tuesday, May 31, 2022, at the Hills Church (aka Pinon Hills Church) in Farmington, with viewing taking place before the service. Interment was at the Kirtland/Fruitland Cemetery in Kirtland.

Lorene was born in Lower Fruitland on Feb. 2, 1934, to John Dick Barber and Ałk’i jiibaa’ Nez Barber, meaning, ‘One who wars on all sides and comes back together” (a powerful name). She was Ashiihii, born for Tachii’nii. Her Navajo name was K’éh yiłnazbaa’, which means “friendly wherever she goes.”

From an early age, Lorene learned the importance of hard work and a strong work ethic from herding sheep. She lived and herded sheep in Fruitland and Table Mesa, New Mexico. She longed to attend school but was told to stay and herd sheep. However, at age 12, her aunt agreed and signed her up for a five-year school program at Stewart Indian Boarding School in Stewart, Nevada. She truly enjoyed her time there learning different life skills, like how to manage money, how to find a job, etc. While she was there, she met Wilson T. Brown with whom she married and later had seven children. After finishing school, she and Wilson did some work in San Jose, California, area.

Lorene moved back to the Gallup area and worked at the Ranch Kitchen as a waitress, then with Tse Bonito Elementary as a cook’s helper and school bus driver. Lorene moved back to Fruitland after divorcing Wilson. She later met/married Harold E. Hersey with whom they adopted her cousins’ children, Stephanie, and Eldon. She just could not give up yet another child when she and Harold were foster parents to many children.

Lorene had a tremendous love for the Lord and her faith in God was strong. She traveled the Navajo Nation and the United States as part of the singing ministry the Fruitland Gospel Trio, sharing the love of God. Lorene recorded six albums including one solo album. She also participated in a rest home ministry sharing God’s love through song and the Word. Her faith was evident in her walk and talk. She always said, “The Lord is with me always.”

In the year 2000, Lorene was selected Women of the Year in the state of New Mexico. Thirty women were selected out of 30,000 applicants. Then-Gov. Gary Johnson presented the plaques.

Lorene loved her family and friends and cherished the time she spent with them. She is greatly missed by all those who knew her.

Lorene is survived by her children, Cynthia Trujillo with husband Arvin, Gloria Tom with husband, Leland, Janice Brown, Sandra Polacca with husband Gerald, Stephanie Cummings with husband Lee Sr., and Eldon Hersey; grandsons, Michael Brown (wife Mychelle), Justin Pioche, Geoffrey Trujillo, Casey Tom, Khali Pioche, Tristan Sandoval (girlfriend Lael) and Lee Cummings Jr; granddaughters, Crystal Tom, Tondalia Brown States (husband Tim), Olivia Trujillo, Danielle Sandoval, Lacey Trujillo and Tia Pioche; great-grandsons: Devin Brown, Kevin and David States and Noah and Mateo Sandoval; and great-granddaughters, Aryanna, Araalyn and Desiree Brown and Nizhonibah States.

Lorene is preceded in death by her parents, John Dick Barber and Ałk’i jiibaa’ Nez Barber; sons, Larry Brown, Jay T. Brown and Gary W. Brown; and sister, Eleanor B. Robinson.
