Edward T. Begay

Edward T. Begay

REHOBOTH, N.M. – Funeral services for Edward Thomas Begay (Ed T), 87, of Gallup, will be held Monday, June 20, at 10 a.m., at the Rehoboth Christian Reformed Church in Rehoboth, New Mexico, with Rev. Keith Bulthuis, retired pastor of Bethany Christian Reformed Church of Gallup, officiating. Burial will follow at the Rehoboth cemetery.

Begay was born Jan. 8, 1935, in Tse Yaaniichii, New Mexico, into the Tódích’ii’nii Clan, born for Tl’ogi Clan. His maternal grandfather is Táchii’nii and his paternal grandfather is Kinyaa’áanii. He passed away June 12, 2022, in Albuquerque.

Begay grew up in the Nose Rock area of what is now called “Superman Canyon” in New Mexico. He graduated from Rehoboth Christian School and attended Calvin College and later graduated from Albuquerque Business College. He received honorary doctorate degrees from the College of Ganado and Calvin College.

In 1958, Begay began serving in the U.S. Army and was stationed in Fort Jackson, South Carolina. He was honorably discharged after two years of service.

Begay married his high school sweetheart, Cecilia M. Damon Begay, in 1961. Together they had two daughters, Sharlene Begay-Platero and Sandra K. Begay.

Shortly after, Begay began running the Navajo Nation’s Data Processing Department for nearly 10 years. During this time, he noticed many issues that needed to be addressed within the community of Church Rock. He sought and was elected president of Church Rock Chapter. He served in that capacity from 1968 to 1970. After much urging from community members, he successfully ran for a position on the Navajo Tribal Council.

Begay’s life and work reflect the evolution and maturity of the Navajo Nation, its government, and the Navajo people.

From 1971 to 1983, Begay represented the Church Rock and Breadsprings chapters on the Navajo Tribal Council. During his career as Council delegate, he chaired the Advisory Committee, the Education Committee, the Economic Development and Planning Committee, the Budget and Finance Committee, and the Federal Restructuring Task Force.

Begay was also elected the first president of the Navajo Area School Board Association. His work as president of the Fort Wingate School Board and the Eastern Navajo School Board Association led to his involvement with NASBA.

As NASBA president, Begay worked closely with Councilwoman Dr. Annie Wauneka, Dr. Donald Noble and others to improve the Navajo school curriculum, especially in science. Their goal was to get students educated for positions such as doctors, nurses, teachers, lawyers and scientists by going to college.

Begay also served the citizens of McKinley County and was elected as a McKinley County commissioner in 1979. He served as commission chair from 1981 to 1983. In 1992, he was appointed by the New Mexico governor to serve on the New Mexico District 6 Highway Commission and the New Mexico Commission of Indian Affairs.

In 1982, Peterson Zah and Begay successfully campaigned for the offices of Navajo Nation chairman and vice chairman, serving Navajo Nation from 1983 to 1987.

As vice chairman, Begay gained a national perspective on issues affecting Native Americans, particularly the Navajo people. He was presented an opportunity to become acquainted with influential individuals at all levels of government from the chapters to the counties, states, and Congress.

He worked closely with Zah and the Navajo Nation Council to renegotiate mineral, coal, oil, and gas leases with major energy companies to better benefit the Navajo people. He helped to create the Permanent Trust Fund, now valued at several billion dollars, that continue to provide a source of income for future generations.

After the Zah-Begay administration, Begay decided to return to the Navajo Nation Council and successfully sought re-election in 1991. His return to the Council proved beneficial to his constituents as he had the opportunity to participate in the formation and subsequent adoption of landmark legislation, including the Local Governance Act. In 1999, he was elected speaker of the Navajo Nation Council. As speaker, he led the 88-member Council in formulating, debating, and enacting legislation for the Navajo people.

Serving two terms as speaker, Begay successfully sponsored several pieces of landmark legislation including Diné Bi Beehaz’áanii Bitsé Siléí – The Foundation of the Diné, Diné Law, and Diné Government, the New Mexico Gaming Compact, Arizona Gaming Compact, the Legislative Redistricting, the United Nations’ Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, Individual Indian Money Accounts, the Local Governance Trust Fund, the NNOGC Oil and Gas Special Revenue Fund, the Navajo Agricultural Products Industry, and the Navajo Nation Water Rights Claim Fund.

After serving two terms as speaker of the Council, Begay was encouraged to throw his hat ring for the Navajo Nation presidency in 2002. He filed his application for candidacy for president of the Navajo Nation on May 3, 2002. A month later, the Navajo Election Administration informed him that he did not meet the residency requirements and was disqualified as a candidate for president.

On June 13, 2002, Begay filed a written complaint with the Office of Hearings and Appeals. On June 25, 2002, the OHA affirmed the decision of the NEA. The decision to disqualify Begay as a candidate was baffling as his previous applications for candidacy for Council and as vice chairman had always been approved. After a successful appeal to the Navajo Nation Supreme Court, his name was reinstated as a candidate for president. However, his name was not included on the printed ballots and had to be written in due to the delays, a factor that may have cost him votes despite his popularity.

Begay served on several boards after his Navajo Nation career. He served on the board of the Navajo Housing Authority, Navajo Gaming Enterprise, and the Navajo Agricultural Produce Industry for various lengths of time.

A devout Christian, Begay served his Bethany Christian Reformed Church (Gallup) as a Council member and as an elder with the national Christian Reformed Church Synod.

Begay was chairman of the board for the American Indian Bank in 1986 and 1987. He also served as a board member of the Blue Cross Blue Shield, Audit & Finance Committee from 1985 to 1995 and the New Mexico Blue Cross Blue Shield from 1983 to 2005.

Begay enjoyed reading his Bible along with daily devotions in addition to his reading the newspapers every day and listening to the local and national news. He enjoyed traveling and eating different and interesting food from around the country and internationally.

Begay, fluent in Navajo and English, was recognized as a respected orator and wore a western hat that became his trademark. He was willing to speak up for issues and work towards the resolution of conflict.

Begay was also admired for being an avid listener and only offered advice if wanted. He enjoyed visiting with family, friends and always gave a warm smile to everyone. He left behind a great legacy for the Navajo people.

Begay is survived by his wife, daughters and son-in-law John Platero Jr. He never stopped grieving the loss of his beloved wife Cecilia, in 1991 and found solace in public service. He took incredible pride in his twin grandchildren, Jennabah Celia and Joshua Edward Platero.

Begay is also survived by his aunt, Bonnie Natanabah of Tohatchi; sisters, Iona Notah of Tohatchi and Julia John of Okeechobee, Florida; brother, Ernie Martin of Tohatchi; and many, many cousin-sisters and brothers.

Begay is preceded in death by his wife, Cecilia M. Damon; father, Willie Nez; mother, Jennabah Hood Nez; and sister, Irene Johnson.

In 1962, while attending Ohio State University as a history major, Gary was called to serve a two-year LDS mission in the Southwest Indian Mission. He spent the next two years on the Navajo Reservation working with Navajo elders and learning to speak the Navajo language.

Amidst 15 years residence and work on the Navajo Reservation, Gary’s academic pursuits led to work on a master’s in Indian education at Arizona State University and a master’s and Ph.D. in anthropology at the University of Chicago.

Gary taught at Yale University and the University of Michigan and most recently was a professor of anthropology and American Indian studies at the University of Washington, Seattle.

Gary had known of Nellie before when he was a companion with Kenneth Nabahe in Piñon in 1963. At one point, Gary asked Kenneth who was sending him letters with $20 bills in them. Kenneth said it was his sister, Nellie, and Gary said, “Someday I am going to meet and marry her.”

After Gary finished his mission in August 1964, he returned to Shiprock to see Nellie. They went to a movie in Farmington and then the next day they went to the Navajo Nation Fair in Window Rock.

Gary enrolled at BYU in September 1964. He made several visits to Shiprock during that fall and Nellie made a couple of visits to Provo. Frank Adakai

ALBUQUERQUE – Frank Adakai was born June 26, 1940, in Fort Defiance, to Fred and Lenita Adakai.

Proud tribal member of the Navajo Nation, Frank grew up in Manuelito, New Mexico, the oldest of 12 brothers and sisters. He spent time herding sheep and learning the traditional ceremony ways from his grandmother, Nazbah.

Frank loved riding his horse while herding sheep and when it came time to go to school at the counsel of his grandparents, parents, uncles, and aunts, he attended school in Manuelito, Fort Defiance, and finished high school at Phoenix Indian School.

He returned to Manuelito and entered the Navajo Nation Police.

When Frank was stationed in Window Rock, he met the love of his life, Corie Moran, in 1961. He has always described the first time he saw her as “love at first sight.” They married on Dec. 22, 1962. Throughout the years, Frank and Corie were inseparable.

During his law enforcement career, Frank was stationed in Manuelito, Chinle, Tuba City, and Window Rock. In 1973, he attended the FBI Academy in Quantico, Virginia. Upon his completion, Corie attended his graduation ceremony. He became a federal agent and started working for the Bureau of Indian Affairs until 1998.

Frank and Corie traveled north up into Canada each year for several months in the summer to spend time with family and take part in Corie’s Midewiwin ceremonies. The Midewiwin family always invited him to partake in the ceremonies and to be part of, but he would say, “No, I am watching and learning.”

Loving husband, father, papa, great-grandfather, uncle, brother, and son who was always willing to give a hand to those who asked for assistance. Wonderful man Frank was. He was kind, caring, loving, compassionate, and believed in his ways and lived his life of 82 years working hard and enjoying his family.

In the 59 years of marriage, Frank, Corie and children moved about 12 times. Corie followed her loving husband in his occupation in the criminal justice system. During the 37.5 years, Frank, Corie and their family resided on the Navajo Reservation in Tuba City, Chinle, Many Farms, and Window Rock. They lived on the Mescalero Apache Reservation in Mescalero, New Mexico; Shoshone Arapahoe Reservation in Fort Washakie, Wyoming; Red Lake Ojibwa Reservation in Red Lake, Minnesota; and Rosebud Sioux Reservation in Mission, South Dakota.

They also resided in Washington, D.C., Central Office of Criminal Justice, for one year before Frank was reassigned to the Albuquerque regional office. Frank and Corie moved back to Albuquerque in 1985 and purchased their home in Paradise Hills.

Frank, along with his beloved Corie, spent many years helping their community. They contributed by organizing youth baseball leagues, boxing leagues, basketball leagues, wellness conferences, powwows, and entertainment. Proactivity and prevention being the underlying theme.

Frank was the founder, planner, organizer and coordinator of the New Year’s Eve Sobriety Powwow. This powwow was founded based on New Year’s being the deadliest period for vehicle crashes. The powwow started as a one-day event but later became a two-day event. The New Year’s Sobriety Powwow was planned, organized and coordinated for 15 years.

Frank was also the founder, planner, organizer and coordinator of the annual Wellness/Healing Skills Conference held for 12 years in Rio Rancho, New Mexico. The conference was founded based on assisting people in learning how to maintain a healthy lifestyle. He made sure the facilitators for the conference were all Native Indian professionals who were well qualified and held educational credentials.

The conference was attended by councilors, social service, police officers, and behavioral health professionals. In addition, other community people were invited and attended the conference. The conference awarded 21 hours of Continuing Education Units, sanctioned by the state of New Mexico Credentialing Board.

Frank became an actor and was a member of the Screen Actors Guild. In the 12 years of his acting, he was selected for the following films: “Every Hour,” “Everyday Police” film, “A Thousand Roads,” “Seven Arrows Telenova,” “Swing Vote,” “Almas de la Santa Fe,” “This Must be the Place,” “Tiger Eyes,” “All In A Day’s Work,” and “Graves.” Commercials include Nissan Pathfinder, TBWA Worldwide/Chiat/Day Second Hand Smoke, Direct Buy, and tourism between South Korea/USA.

Frank lost his beloved “beautiful Bbaby,” as he called Corie, on April 24, 2022. He was so brokenhearted, especially knowing that they would have been married 60 years this coming December 2022. He missed his lifelong love of his life, Corie. On May 14, 2022, he took his beloved back to North Dakota.

All in all, everything comes to an end. Everyone will experience advancement in age and become an elder. People will also experience health problems prohibiting and limiting things they use to do in life. Frank would say, “Corie always said there was no exception.” Corie’s main complaint was “People lie, Golden Age gives you grief, as you become very limited and health problems become very imminent.”

Surviving family members of Frank are his children, Kurt David of Albuquerque, Jaylene (husband Mike) of Rio Rancho, and Kevin Wade of Santa Fe; siblings, Rose Austin, Patrick Adakai, Pauline Myers, and Justin Adakai; and four grandchildren and three great-grandsons.

Frank is preceded in death by his beloved wife, Corie Moran; father, Fred Adakai; mother, Lenita YahDiBah Adakai; sisters, Stella Adakai, Bessie Johnson, Louise Lucero, Anita Adakai and Anna Aarseth; and brothers, Jerry Adakai, Alvin Adakai and Paul Adakai.

Frank will be missed as many have shared stories and have made it known: Mr. Adakai was a legend.

Viewing will take place Monday, Aug. 15, at the Desert View Funeral Home (U.S. 491) in Shiprock, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. (DST).

In 1958, Leon’s family moved to Holbrook, where he attended and graduated from Holbrook High School in 1974. Thereafter, he served in the U.S. Army, as an environmental engineer and was stationed in Germany and toured Central Europe.

Upon returning to the U.S., Leon went to school at the former Devry where he studied computer technology and computer aided drafting and took every software class that was available to him.

Leon was employed at the Indian Health Service in Phoenix, where he met his wife of 34.5 years, Mary Cecil-Spencer. In 1988, they returned to the Navajo Nation to Mary’s homeland in Bisti, where they built their home and where he resided the remainder of his lifetime.

Leon was a great leader, always looking to apply for new grants and opportunities to assist his community and for those in need. Often traveling and assisting many constituents on the weekends and late hours.

It was heart wrenching to know we lost our life’s comedian. Leon entered Heaven and is going to host tonight’s Comedy Club. Knowing Leon, he’s going to do it all in the Navajo language. He was unique and always started his day and/or meetings with a joke. Nothing but laughter to get a serious meeting or a bad day to reverse its course. He loved to see people smile and enjoyed a great laugh.

Leon was the Champion of Champions and was never afraid and challenged life consistently. Every project he completed was done efficiently and effectively. There was no room for mistakes. Ensuring that deadlines were met and new projects were on the horizon for the community.

Ensuring his staff had access and knowledge of the current software available to them. He believed in technology and used it extensively in his life and working environment. He loved the touch of a button to make life easy.

Johnny was born in Pawnee, Oklahoma, on Nov. 20, 1939, to Miller C. and Cynthia Ellen McCombs Butler.

Johnny, a member of the Wyandotte Tribe of Oklahoma, was raised and educated in Newkirk, Oklahoma. He was active in many sports during his high school years and graduated from Newkirk High School.

Johnny married his high school sweetheart, Helen Butler, shortly after graduation and the two of them then moved to Guthrie, Oklahoma, where Johnny worked and attended Central State College in Edmond, Oklahoma, pursuing studies in business administration.

Johnny and his family moved to Winslow, Arizona, in 1961 where Johnny worked various jobs and owned businesses, including a Montgomery Wards Catalog store, where, in 1969 he was named Agent of the Year. In 1970, he was subsequently honored for being responsible for the Montgomery Ward Store with the highest volume of sales in the southwestern United States.

Johnny, who lit up any room that he entered and was fond of giving everyone he knew a nickname, was a volunteer firefighter, active in Kiwanis, the local Elks Lodge, Rotary where he was a Paul Harris Fellow, the Masons where he attained the designation of 32nd-degree Mason, and the El Zaribah Shriners.

While on the City Council, Johnny worked to help improve Winslow’s water system, the Winslow Police-Court Complex, worked for the improvement of the city’s ballparks, worked for improvements at Clear Creek, devoted significant time to the development of the county library, and was instrumental in guiding and overseeing the City of Winslow’s budget.

Johnny worked diligently to improve the parks in Navajo County and was rewarded for his efforts by the National Association of Country Park and Recreation officials with a Distinguished Board of Commission Member award.
