Edward J. Shirley Sr.

GALLUP — The funeral services for Edward Justin Shirley Sr., 89, of Pine Springs, Arizona, were held on Dec. 9 at the Lighthouse Church in Gallup. Interment followed at the family plot in Klagetoh, Arizona.

Edward was born June 5, 1933. He was born for Naasht’ézhí Dine’é Táchii’nii (Zuni/Red Running Into the Water People Clan). His nálí is Tsénjíkiní (Honey Combed Rock People). He passed away Nov. 28, 2022, in Klagetoh.

Edward served in the U.S. Marine Corps and was a carpenter, silversmith, and pastor. He was a history buff who loved to make jewelry, read the Bible, and mentor to the young and the community.

Edward is survived by his children, Edward Shirley Jr., Leonard Shirley, Cynthia Deschinny, Glenda Shirley, and John Shirley.

Edward is preceded in death by his wife, Margaret (Maggie) Shirley, and children, Edgar Shirley, Priscilla Chavez, and Jennifer Shirley.

GALLUP — The funeral services for Edgar Lucas Shirley, 59, of Klagetoh, Arizona, were held on Dec. 9 at the Lighthouse Church in Gallup. Interment followed at Edward Shirley Sr.’s family plot in Klagetoh.

Edgar was born July 16, 1963, in Oakland, California. He was born for Tábąąhá (Water’s Edge Clan). His nálí is Naasht’ézhí Dine’é Táchii’nii (Zuni/Red Running Into the Water People); cheii is Tsénjíkiní (Honey Combed Rock People). He passed away Nov. 28, 2022, in Klagetoh.

Edgar graduated from Sanders-Valley High School in 1982 and served in the U.S. Army. He loved fishing, cooking, reading, planting, watching old-time period movies, and being involved with his community.

Edgar is survived by his wife, Mary Shirley; sons, Edward Shirley and Justin Shirley; daughters, Bonnie Shirley Tafoya and Toni Cramer; siblings, Edward Shirley Jr., Leonard Shirley, Cynthia Deschinny, Glenda Shirley, and John Shirley; and eight grandchildren.

Edgar is preceded in death by his mother, Margaret (Maggie) Shirley; father, Edward J. Shirley; and sisters, Marcella Arriola, Priscilla Chavez, and Jennifer Shirley.

GALLUP — The funeral services for Gerald L. Tom, 29, of Gallup, will be held on Monday, Dec. 19, at 1:30 p.m., at Rollie Mortuary in Gallup. Burial will follow at the Gallup City Cemetery.

Gerald was born March 29, 1993, in Albuquerque, into the Haltsooí (Meadow People Clan). He was born for ‘Áshįįhí (Salt People Clan). He passed away Dec. 7, 2022, in Albuquerque.

Gerald attended elementary school in Albuquerque, Stagecoach Elementary School, JFK Middle School, Miyamura High School, and Job Corps. He worked at the Gallup newspaper, Safeway, Burger King, security in Albuquerque, and Dalta Uniform and Linens Company in Albuquerque.

Gerald enjoyed playing basketball and football, cooking, watching movies, playing chess board games, and playing with his nephews.

Gerald is survived by his parents, Geraldine Shirley and Ethan Tom; brothers, Giovanni Tom, Preston Tom, Christian Shirley, Tristan Tom, Eli, Eric Tom, and Ethan Jr.; sisters, Cheyanne Tom, Ivana, and Erica; and grandmothers, Louise C. Eskeets Garcia and Elise Tom.

Gerald is preceded in death by his grandfathers, Richard Shirley and Eddie Tom.

Honorary pallbearers will be Cheyanne Tom, Preston Tom, Christian Shirley, Lijah Ramone, Giovanni Tom, Eric Tom, Tristan Tom, and Saul Minjar.

KAYENTA – Our beloved father and grandfather, Phillip T. Luna, 73, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on the evening of Dec. 11, 2022, in Mesa, Arizona.

He is the son of Phil Luna Sr. and Ruth Glassie Luna of Chilchinbeto, Arizona. Phillip is the oldest of eight children and was born into the Tó’aheedlíinii (The Water Flows Together clan). He is born for Tódích’íi’nii (Bitter Water Clan). He was a civil engineer for 35 years, working for BHP and Freeport McMoran, and as a financial advisor for five years, working at Morgan Stanley.

He is survived by his loving wife Laurie of 53 years and children Janise (Dino), Marvin (Tammie), Vidal (Michelle), and Natalie. Phillip will also be fondly remembered by his grandchildren – Loren, Cameron, Grace, Mackenzie, Adelaide, Sierra, LuAnn, DeVin, and Tiberius; and by numerous family and friends. Funeral services and reception will be held at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Church in Kayenta Dec. 17. Services begin at 10 a.m. and reception at 1:30 p.m. Gravesite burial will be at the Luna family plot in Chilchinbeto. Those who desire to donate in the name of “The Phillip T. Luna Memorial Fund” may do so with any Wells Fargo.

IYANBITO, N.M. — Funeral services for Lucille Jean Saunders, 65, of Iyanbito, New Mexico, will be held Tuesday, Dec. 20, at 10 a.m., at the Gospel Lighthouse Church in Iyanbito, with Pastor Mark Thomas Sr. officiating. Burial will follow in Rehoboth, New Mexico.

Lucille was born Sept. 12, 1957, in Crownpoint, into the Chishí (Chiricahua Apache). She was born for Tó baazhní’ázhí (Two Who Came To the Water Clan). She passed away Dec. 13, 2022, in Albuquerque.

Lucille was employed with Home Health Care. She enjoyed making jewelry and loved the company of her grandchildren.

Lucille is survived by her husband, Norris Nez Sr.; sons, Danny Nez Sr., Alex Nez, and Norris Nez Jr.; daughters, Lisa Saunders, Ailene Nez, Erleen Nez, Colleen Nez, and Gabi Martinez; sister, Lucille Ann Saunders; and 19 grandchildren.

Lucille is preceded in death by her biological mother, Ethel Cherimiah; and parents, Annie and Jay Saunders.

Pallbearers will be Danny Nez Sr., Alex Nez, Norris Nez Jr., Phillip Betom Jr., Danny Nez Jr., and Eric Saunders.

The honorary pallbearer will be Daniel Saunders.

A reception will take place at the Iyanbito Chapter House following services.

KIRTLAND, N.M. — Funeral services for Fannie Lowe Atcitty, 69, of Shiprock, were held Dec. 17 at the Sunset Hills Baptist Church in Kirtland, New Mexico. Interment followed in Shiprock.

Fannie was born Dec. 4, 1952, in Shiprock, into the Táchii’nii (Red Running Into the Water People Clan), born for Tł’ááshchí’í (Red Bottom People Clan). Her nalí is Ta’neeszahnii (Tangle); cheii is Naakai dine’é (Mexican). She passed away Nov. 29, 2022, in Shiprock.

Fannie is survived by her daughter, Antoinette R. Atcitty; son, Ronald D. Atcitty; and four grandchildren.

GALLUP — Funeral services for Evan A. Nachin, 32, of Vanderwagen, New Mexico, will be held Friday, Dec. 23, at 10 a.m., at The Lighthouse Church in Gallup, with Pastor Alvin Cayatineto officiating. Burial will follow in Vanderwagen.

Evan was born July 7, 1990, in Gallup, into the Tábąąhá (Water’s Edge Clan), born for Weed People. He passed away Dec. 14, 2022, in Vanderwagen.

Evan attended Chichiltah Community School, David Skeets Elementary School, Gallup Middle School, and Job Corps. He worked at Denny’s and American Steel in Gallup.

Evan enjoyed working outside, playing the guitar, helping his family members, and taking care of his fur babies.

Evan is survived by his parents, Kristie Willis and Avelar Nachin Sr.; brothers, Delvin, Tyrell and Ajay Nachin; and paternal grandmother, Maggie Nachin.

Evan is preceded in death by his maternal grandmother, Nancy Willis; and paternal grandfather, Tommy Nachin.

Honorary pallbearers will be Delvin Nachin, Tyrell Nachin, Ajay Nachin, Derric Spencer, and Cody Spencer.

GALLUP — Funeral services for Calvin Roy Chischilly, 63, of Church Rock, New Mexico, will be held Friday, Dec. 23, at 10 a.m., at Rollie Mortuary in Gallup, with Pastor Eddie Rodriguez officiating. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial in Gallup.

Calvin was born Feb. 9, 1959, in Rehoboth, New Mexico, into the Tódích’íi’nii (Bitter Water Clan), born for Naakai dine’é (Mexican Clan). He passed away Dec. 17, 2022, in Church Rock.

Calvin graduated from Gallup High School in 1978 and attended Central New Mexico Community College and Navajo Technical University. He enjoyed ranch life and loved helping others with yard work, household renovations, car repairs, and was a care provider. He loved and adored his grandchildren greatly.

Calvin is survived by his mother, Margaret Chischilly; brothers, Max Chischilly Jr., Ernest Chischilly, Melvin Chischilly, and Marvin Chischilly; sisters, Maxine Chischilly, Della Chischilly, Marnita Chischilly, and Lavern Sanchez; and 17 grandchildren.

Calvin is preceded in death by his father, Max Chischilly Sr.; brothers, Alvin Ray Chischilly and Michael Chischilly; nephews, Brandon Chischilly and Lance Sanchez; and grandparents, Ellen and Frank Collins.

Pallbearers will be Marvin Chischilly, Brian Chischilly and Christopher M. Chischilly.

COMB RIDGE, Ariz. – A private graveside service for Irene Natalie Price will be held today, Dec. 22, with a reception at the family home.

On the evening of Dec. 18, our courageous and beautiful mother passed away at her home after a long battle with Parkinson’s Disease.

Born in the aftermath of the Great Depression and just months before the outbreak of World War II, Irene was the only child of an arranged marriage between Dorothy Francis (Kinłichíi’nii) and Oliver Black (Bit’ahnii). She was born into the traditional Navajo life of ranching and weaving.

The family descended from the band of Navajos who collectively called themselves Asdzaan Woo’ Nit’eeliiyee great-grandchildren.

Irene was enrolled at the Dennehotso Boarding School. Her education continued with summers spent attending Bible school in Cortez, Colorado. By the time she was a teenager she was enrolled at Wingate High School.

At Wingate High School, Irene’s intelligence and poise won her homecoming queen attendant and spring prom queen. She was also a majorette in the high school marching band and during her senior year, she entered the Miss Navajo Contest where she placed third in the traditional category.

After graduating from Wingate High School, Irene attended the College of Ganado where she received her associate’s degree and continued her education at the University of New Mexico where she graduated with her bachelor’s degree in education. She then went on to attend Northern Arizona University, earning her master’s degree in special education.

Irene was an educator for more than 30 years. She taught at several schools in Utah and Arizona. From her early years at Montezuma Creek and Blanding, Utah, to the Flagstaff Unified School District’s Leupp Elementary School, her time as a teacher grew to include teaching night classes where she helped young adults earn their General Equivalency Diploma.

After retiring from the Flagstaff Unified School District, Irene moved to her ancestral home near Comb Ridge, on the Arizona/Utah border. She taught Special Education classes at Red Mesa High School where she was instrumental in launching her students to vocational trade schools.

Irene is survived by her husband of 61 years, Eugene Price; children, Brenda, Vern, Iris, Vanessa, and Luann; and nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Jamesina was born Oct. 25, 1993, into Tsi’naajinii, born for Kiyaa’áanii. She passed away Dec. 17, 2022.

Jamesina is survived by her children, Nate and Natalia Browning; father, James Scott Wilson Jr.; and siblings, Irvin Woods and Jamie Wilson.

Jamesina is preceded in death by her mother, Marlene Tahe; brothers, Calvin and Kevin Smith; and grandmother, Minnie Tahe.

ALBUQUERQUE — On Dec. 16, 2022, Isabell Anderson, 86, passed away in her home with family by her side. She grew up in Fort Defiance and moved to Albuquerque after retirement.

Isabell was proud to be the first of two women to drive for the Navajo Nation Transit System, and after 22 years of service, she retired in 2001.

Isabell is survived by her children, Louis Anderson Jr., Diane Sanchez, Theresa Clay, and Darrell Banward.

Isabell is preceded in death by her parents, Sophie and Jimmy Begay; brothers, Perry and Thurman Begay; son, Robert Anderson; and two grandchildren.

FORT DEFIANCE — Funeral service for Justin B. Curley Jr., 40, is Jan. 2 at 10 a.m. at The Family Church Assembly of God.

Justin was born June 18, 1982, into Naaneesht’ézhi Táchii’nii, born for ‘Áshįįhí. He passed away Dec. 21, 2022.

Justin attended Window Rock High School and Clearfield Technical. He served in the Army and worked for Navajo Tribal Utility Authority, Navajo Nation Propane Company and Navajo Engineering Construction Authority.

Justin is survived by his wife, Flora Curley; children, Kieran, Keaira and Tierra Curley; mother, Bertha Curley; siblings, Phillip Wilson, Geraldine Mecham, Gabrielle Curley, and Sharon, Pamela and Vincenita Wilson.

Justin is preceded in death by his father, Justin Bia Curley Sr.; maternal grandparents, Sadie and Steven Wilson; paternal grandparents, Kathryn Yazzie and Charlie Curley; and Melvin, Sarah, Laura, Mark, Kimberly, Lavon, and Cheryl Wilson, and Dolly James.

Ryan was born Dec. 26, 2003, into Mą’ii deeshgiizhinii, born for Táchii’nii. He passed away Dec. 23, 2022.

Ryan was a senior at Many Farms High School and loved to attend Native American Church meetings.

Ryan is survived by his parents, Tina Burnside and Nielson Roanhorse; siblings, Cody Joe, Naomi and Tienna Begay, and Taelor Roanhorse; maternal grandfather, George Smiley; and paternal grandmother, Nora Roanhorse.

Ryan is preceded in death by his maternal grandmother, Mary Smiley; and paternal grandfather, Neilson Roanhorse Sr.

Angelina C. Benally

KLAGETOH, Ariz. — Funeral service for Angelina C. Benally, 84, is Dec. 30 at 10 a.m. at St. Anne’s Mission Church. Angelina was born Aug. 18, 1938, into Tsénjíkiní, born for Tábąąhá. She passed away Dec. 26, 2022.

Angelina lived life to the fullest and aided many individuals with her gift of healing using natural herbs.

Angelina is survived by her children, Benjamin, Edwin, Edmond, Ernest Jr., and Elverna Benally; and sisters, Dorothy Fulton and Evelyn King.

Angelina is preceded in death by her companion, Dennis Kee.

Jay E. Ashcroft

SUMMIT LAKE, Colo. — Jay E. Ashcroft passed away Aug. 22, 2022, at 96. He was born in Ramah, on March 19, 1926, to James Wilford Ashcroft and Bertha (James) Ashcroft.

Earl reported to the Navy Inducted Center in Santa Fe and was immediately activated at 17. During World War II, he served as a gunner and a Merchant Marine sailing around the globe three times.

Early in their marriage, Earl and Birdie lived and worked in Fort Defiance, where Earl managed Dunn Mercantile Company. Later, they moved to manage the Coppermine Trading Post near Glen Canyon Dam. They left Coppermine to manage the trading posts in Tohatchi and Divide, where their daughter was born, and the trading post in Wildcat, returning to run the Fort Defiance Trading Post for over 30 years when their son was born.

After retiring from the trading post business, Earl and Birdie moved to Summit Lake, where they built and operated Ponderosa Cabins.

Earl is survived by his children, Sharon (Harold) Walker and Mike (Jane E. Duncan) Ashcroft.

In honor of Earl’s wishes, no services were held.

GALLUP — Funeral services for Leta Faye Parker, 49, of Gallup, will be held today, Jan. 5, at 10 a.m., at Rollie Mortuary in Gallup, with Jerry DuBois officiating. Burial will follow at the Gallup City Cemetery.

Leta was born Sept. 24, 1973, in Gallup, into the ‘Áshįįhí (Salt People Clan). She was born for Apache People Clan. She passed away Dec. 27, 2022, in Mexican Springs, New Mexico.

Leta attended Wingate and Crownpoint High School. She was employed as a silversmith and housekeeper at various hotels in Gallup.

Leta loved spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren. She enjoyed beading, arts and crafts, cooking for her family, cleaning, collecting ceramic roosters and chickens, going to church, and helping others.

Leta is survived by her husband, Leroy Parker; daughter, Latisha Parker; brothers, Norman Shorty, Paul Shorty, and Anthony Brown; sister, Starletta Escobar; and four grandchildren.

Leta is preceded in death by her mother, Jennie Brown; father, John Shorty; brothers, Micheal Hoskie and Herbert Shorty; uncle, Joe Hoskie; grandmother, Yanesbah Hoskey; and grandfather, Pat Hoskie.

A reception will take place at Wowie’s Event Center following services.

GALLUP — Funeral services for Kasei Rae Storer, 36, of Tempe, Arizona, will be held Friday, Jan. 6, at 2 p.m., at Rollie Mortuary in Gallup, with Delbert Nez officiating. Burial will follow in Rehoboth, New Mexico.

Kasei was born Sept. 22, 1986, in Gallup, into the Kinłichíi’nii (Red House People Clan). She was born for ‘Áshįįhí (Salt People Clan). She passed away Dec. 28, 2022, in Gilbert, Arizona.

Kasei earned a bachelor’s in interdisciplinary studies from Arizona State University and a master’s degree in counseling from Grand Canyon University. She was employed as a clinical counselor at the Center for Behavioral Health.

Kasei enjoyed learning her Diné language and was a basketball coach who loved watching her daughter, nieces, and Niners play.

Kasei is survived by her daughter, Tayla Ann Yazzie; her parents, Ruth Benally and Christopher Storer; and sisters, Tiffany Peters and Sandra Storer.

Kasei is preceded in death by Harry Benally, Cory Yazzie, and Wilhimena Benally.

Pallbearers will be Cody Yazzie, Wesley Benally, Kyle Roan, Ronald Yazzie, Jaelin Lee, and Anthony Garcia.

Lawanda was born Sept. 15, 1966, in Dallas, Texas, into the Hashtł’ishnii (Mud Clan). She was born for Táchii’nii (Red Running Into the Water People Clan). Her nalí is Tódích’íi’nii (Bitter Water); cheii is Tábąąhá (Water’s Edge). She passed away in Chinle.

Lawanda earned an associate’s degree and enjoyed arts and crafts.

Lawanda is survived by her sisters, Cherylene James, and Michelle Dodson.

Lawanda is preceded in death by Charlene “Geeda” Dodson.

June was born Feb. 10, 1976, in Standing Rock, into the ‘Áshįįhí (Salt People Clan). She was born for Táchii’nii (Red Running Into the Water People Clan). She passed away Dec. 28, 2022, in Gallup.

June attended Tse’ii’ahi Preschool and Tohatchi High School. She worked in various places under the Tohatchi Area of Opportunity.

June enjoyed coloring, writing, puzzles, church (Victory in Christ), and attending Crownpoint High School games.

June is survived by her brothers, Angeles Kalleco, Daniel Kalleco, and Rex Kalleco; sisters, Nancy Benally, Velvet Kalleco, and Helena James; and 10 grandchildren.

June is preceded in death by her mother, June Arviso Kalleco; father, Don Kalleco; and brothers, Lorenzo Kalleco and Ricky James.

SHAWANO, Wis. — Samuel “Sam” Carl Yazzie Sr., 72, or Keshena, passed away Dec. 25, 2022, in Shawano, Wisconsin. He was born Feb. 9, 1950, to the late Richard and Ora (Begay) Yazzie in Table Mesa, New Mexico.

Sam is survived by his wife, Victoria; children, Jason (Elon) Yazzie, Samuel Yazzie Jr., and Joshua (Kylene) Yazzie; siblings, Gilbert (Linda) Yazzie, Herbert (Carol) Yazzie, Verna Yazzie, Laura (Richard) Ceryan, and Robert (Janie) Yazzie; sisters-in-law, Sherry Yazzie, and Vickie Peters; brother-in-law, Waylen Thomas Peters; and three grandchildren and numerous nieces, nephews, and other family and friends.

Sam is preceded in death by his parents; brother, Richard Yazzie Jr.; and sister, Louella Yazzie.

Nathan was born June 16, 1970, in Gallup, into the Tsin Sikaadnii (Clamp Tree Clan). He was born for Naakai Dine’é (Mexican Clan). He passed away Dec. 20, 2022, in Gallup.

Nathan attended Gallup High School and worked at Sports Page for 10 years and at Native Jewelry Supply for five years. He enjoyed spending time with family and loved the Green Bay Packers.

Nathan is survived by his wife, Winifred Watson-Tsosie; sons, Nathan Tsosie Jr. and Kevin Tsosie; daughter, Tenae Yazzie; parents, Nellie Arviso and Robertson Tsosie; brothers, Nathaniel Tsosie, Manuel Tsosie, Mandell Tsosie, Robinson Tsosie, Daryl Tsosie, and Bobby Tsosie; and sister, Pamela Tsosie.

Nathan is preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Etta White Arviso and Henry J. Arviso, and paternal grandparents, Mary and James Tsosie.

Phyllis was born June 13, 1949, in China Springs, New Mexico, into the Táchii’nii (Red Running Into the Water People Clan), born for Tódích’íi’nii (Bitter Water Clan). She passed away Jan. 6, 2023, in Albuquerque.

Phyllis graduated from high school in Phoenix and was employed at Butler’s Office Printing Supply. She loved cooking and sewing. She enjoyed meeting new people and calling them family by the time the conversation ended.

Phyllis is survived by her sons, Jimmie Kee Jr. and Jerry Kee; daughters, LaWanda Romero and Tanya Rae Kee; mother, Betty H. Yazzie; brothers, Robert Douglas and William Douglas; and four grandchildren.

Phyllis is preceded in death by her father, Richard H. Yazzie, and Gillis Douglas.

GALLUP — Funeral services for Edward Sleuth Sr., 82, of Naschitti, New Mexico, will be held today, Jan. 12, at 10 a.m., at the St. Francis Catholic Church in Gallup, with Father Dale Jamison officiating. Burial will follow at the Gallup State Veterans Cemetery.

Edward was born Sept. 25, 1940, in Naschitti, into the Naaneesht’ézhi Táchii’nii (The Charcoal-Streaked Division of the Red Running Into the Water Clan), born for ‘Áshįįhí (Salt People Clan). He passed away Jan. 4, 2023, in Gallup.

Edward attended Wingate High School and Fort Lewis College. He worked for Navajo Tribal Utility Authority, Navajo Communications, and Frontier Communications.

Edward was a U.S. Army veteran, rancher, and telecommunications lineman. He was also an avid basketball player from high school into his older years as a member of the original Chuska Broncos Basketball Team.

Edward is survived by his sons, Edward Sleuth Jr. of Albuquerque, Michael Sleuth of Ganado, and Edwin C. Sleuth of Tampa, Florida; daughters, Karen M. Sleuth of Albuquerque and Margie K. Leonard of Tohatchi, New Mexico; brother, Jerry Sleuth of Naschitti; sisters, Anita Francis of Chinle, Irene Rintala of St. Michaels, Arizona, and Elsie Sleuth and Marie Sleuth, both of Naschitti; and 12 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Edward is preceded in death by his mother, Isabel Roanhorse-Sleuth; father, John Sleuth; and brother, Herman Sleuth.

Anthony was born May 29, 1969, in Fort Riley, Kansas, into the Kinyaa’áanii (Towering House Clan). He was born for Nahiłii. He passed away Dec. 18, 2022, in Maricopa, Arizona.

Anthony graduated from Sanders-Valley High School and worked for Fountains of Hope, helping people regain their lives or find a better way of life by overcoming addictions.

Anthony played football, wrestled, and lifted weights in his younger years. He loved to help others, meet new people, and spend time with his family.

Anthony is survived by his sons, O’tel I. Hicks and Julius Hicks; daughter, Jasmine Hicks; father, Earl Lee Hicks; brothers, Delbert Hicks, Jermaine Hicks, Victor Hicks, and Earl Hicks Jr.; sisters, Phoebe Hicks, Lucinda Hicks, Freda Johnson, and Dedra Hicks; and three grandchildren.

Alfredo was born Oct. 10, 1976, in Apple Valley, California, into the Kinłichíi’nii (Red House People Clan). His nálí is Tábąąhá (Water’s Edge Clan), cheii is Kiyaa’áanii (Towering House Clan). He passed away Jan. 2, 2023, in Greasewood Springs.

Alfredo attended Navajo Technical University and was employed as an electrician and lineman maintainer with Navajo Tribal Utility Authority in Fort Defiance. He enjoyed cooking, traveling to different places, and loved playing basketball.

Alfredo is survived by his daughters, Jordaniel D. Abe and Jazlin D. Abe of Crownpoint; mother, Betty J. Abe; brothers, Anthony Abe and Lemar Abe; and sisters, Laverne Abe and Laceta Abe.

Alfredo is preceded in death by his father, Billy J. Abe.

Pallbearers will be Lemar Abe, Alvin Etcitty, Jackson Belin, Jason Chee, Armond Bosco, and Michael Tso.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Butch Mudbone entered the Spirit World Jan. 2, 2023, near Memphis, Tennessee. He was well-known among a collective group on and off the Navajo Nation.

Mudbone faithfully participated for 16 years in the Sundance ceremony at Big Mountain. He was an avid traditional dancer and a Roadman for the Native American Church. He was a descendant of the Seneca Nation, born to the France people.

Mudbone was a master blues musician and made his living as such. This was Butch Mudbone’s world, and the expression of his blues embraces all the music’s history which preceded him. He was equally comfortable in a solo performance or with the Wolfpack band.

Mudbone repeatedly has performed in France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Czechoslovakia, and Canada. In the United States, he worked at venues such as the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival (28 years), Monterey Jazz Festival, Delta Blues Festival, Tucson Blues Festival, Ojai Bowlful of Blues, and the Memphis Blues Festival.

Mudbone opened shows for B.B. King, James Brown, John Lee Hooker, James Cotton, and many others. In 2021, the Memphis Blues Society honored Mudbone with the Lifetime Achievement Award.

A Celebration of Life has been planned for Thursday, Jan. 19, at the Rockhouse Live (5709 Raleigh LaGrange Rd.) in Memphis. The family will host a memorial service Saturday, Jan. 21, in Memphis.

LOW MOUNTAIN, Ariz. — Graveside service for Brandon Gene, 33, of Low Mountain, Arizona, was held Jan. 10 in Low Mountain, with Irene Nelson officiating.

Brandon was born July 20, 1989, in Phoenix, into the Naasht’ézhí Táchii’nii (Zuni/Red Running Into the Water People Clan), born for Kiyaa’áanii (Towering House Clan). He passed away Dec. 31, 2022, in Alamogordo, New Mexico.

Brandon attended some college and was employed as a line cook. He enjoyed playing video games and loved watching the Rams, Suns, and Rockets play.

Brandon is survived by his brothers, Doug E. Nez and Dimitris E. Nez; sisters, Danielle Gene and Joanie Billiman; and grandparents, Irene Nelson, Alice King, and Jane Watchman-Denepso.

Brandon is preceded in death by his mother, Annie Gene, and stepfather, Randy Yarber Sr.

Pauline attended one year of college for nursing. She was a homemaker and rancher.

Emma was born July 18, 1951, in Ganado, into the Tsénjíkiní (Honey Combed Rock/Cliff Dwellers People Clan). She was born for Tsi’naajinii (Black Streak Wood People Clan). She passed away Dec. 31, 2022, in Flagstaff.

Emma graduated from Holbrook High School and retired after 45 years with the U.S. government. She was a rodeo secretary/timer for many years for several rodeo organizations.

Emma is survived by her sons, Shawn Dodson of Sanders, Arizona, and Sherwin Dodson of Gallup; mother, Minnie Yazzie of Indian Wells; sisters, Verna Yazzie of Holbrook, Arizona, and Sara Winters of Utah; and two grandchildren.

Emma is preceded in death by her husband, Kayo Dodson; father, Kee Yazzie; sister, Sharon Nez; and brother, Terry Yazzie.

ALBUQUERQUE — Our beloved father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, Eugene Henderson, 83, passed away Jan. 4, 2023, at Genesis Nursing Home in Albuquerque.

Eugene was born in Two Wells, New Mexico, to Happy Henderson and Marie Yazzie Henderson of Chéch’iltah, New Mexico, into the Kinyaa’áanii (Towering House Clan), born for Tábąąhá (Water’s Edge Clan).

Eugene graduated from Fort Wingate High School and attended college in Riverside, California, and Chicago. He was a trackman for 26 years, working for BNSF Railroad. He was also a draftsman engineer for the City of Flagstaff, the Navajo tribe, and Gallup Blueprint.

Eugene had a great sense of humor and went out of his way for others. He was a true advocate for education.

Eugene is survived by his sons, Douglas, Brian, and Alvin Henderson; daughters, Darlene, Jacqueline, Sylvia, and Brenda Henderson, and Delores Lee; sister, Angela Grey; and 21 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren, and numerous family and friends.

Eugene is preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Beverly Gorman; great-grandson, Isiah Crum; and siblings, Jerry, Gilbert, and Yazhi Henderson, Dorothy Montano, Gertrude Rondon, Ella Mae Arthur, Nellie Pinto, and Katie Henderson.

At Eugene’s request, there will be no memorial services. Following cremation, a small service for immediate family members will only be available.

In place of monetary or flowers, the family asks that donations be sent to the Community Pantry, P.O. Box 520, Gallup, NM 87305, in the care of E. Henderson.

SHIPROCK — Funeral services for Rashaundal Lyle Comb, also known as Shaun, were held Jan. 14 at the Desert View Funeral Home Chapel in Shiprock. Interment followed at the Cortez cemetery in Cortez, Colorado.

Shaun was born May 29, 1983, in Fort Defiance, to Randall and Shirley Comb, into the Tó’aheedlíinii (Water Flow Together Clan), born for Dibéłzhíní (Black Sheep Clan). He passed away Jan. 7, 2023, in Gallup, at 39.

Shaun grew up in Round Rock, Arizona, and resided in Lupton, Arizona. He graduated from Many Farms High School and earned a construction technology certificate from Navajo Technical College. He was enrolled at the University of New Mexico, studying construction engineering.

Shaun received several achievements and recognition in Skills USA Crafts Training and harnessing naturally occurring winds to generate mechanical power into electricity. He worked as an independent contractor renovating homes and constructing storage sheds.

Shaun loved to build things with his hands. He enjoyed outdoor activities such as archery, gardening, hiking, and fishing.

Shaun was known for his big smile, laughter, charismatic kindness, generosity, and sense of humor. He was also an animal lover, and he owned one cat named Roscoe and three dogs named Bear, Mickey, and Barry.

Shaun is survived by his son, Reydale Comb; parents, Randall and Shirley Comb; siblings, Savanah Six, Radeanna Comb, Rayaundal Comb, Rasheena Comb, and Shevanah Comb; and paternal grandmother, Aspbah Comb.

Shaun is preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Lillie and Chee Claleson; paternal grandfather, Fred Comb; and uncles, Raymond Claleson and Larry Comb.

Pallbearers were Tero Lee, Terrill Lee, Ronnie Claleson, Vito Tsosie, Cyrus Begay, Clawson Van, and Kevin Schenally.

Jeanette attended Ganado Presbyterian School and Riverside High School and earned a nursing assistant certificate. She retired from Indian Health Service.

Jeanette enjoyed sewing, crocheting, knitting, weaving, yard work, and traveling with Navajo Code Talkers.

Jeanette is survived by her sons, Glenn C. Peaches and Nathan W. Peaches; daughters, Doris Jeanette Peaches-Ross and Terri Lynn Peaches; brothers, Slim Claw and Carl Hillis; sisters, Rhoda Watchman, Mary Jeans, Joy Dempsey, Ione Anderson, Naomi Sylvester, and Charlotte Benado; and four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Jeanette is preceded in death by her husband, Alfred James Peaches; sons, Albert J. Peaches and Vernon K. Peaches; parents, Hannabah and Clauyde Hillis; granddaughter, Janet M. Ross; and grandson, Kyler Watchman.

KLAGETOH, Ariz. — Ruby Ann George, 61, of Klagetoh, Arizona, journeyed on Jan. 17, 2023, surrounded by family who loved her very much.

Ruby was Kinyaa’áanii (Towering House Clan) and was born for Tábąąhá (Water’s Edge Clan). Her maternal grandfather is Tódích’íi’nii (Bitter Water), and her paternal grandfather is Tsénjíkiní (Honey Combed Rock/Cliff Dwellers).

Ruby grew up in Wide Ruins and Klagetoh, surrounded by her Kinyaa’áanii and Tábąąhá relatives. Throughout her childhood, she attended boarding schools in Wide Ruins and Winslow graduating from Holbrook High School in 1980. From there, she joined the U.S. Navy and served until 1986. She then received her college education in North Carolina as a certified nurse’s assistant.

Ruby had a fulfilling career in nursing before she fell ill and struggled with various health issues for over 20 years. Even in those times, she came out fighting until the very end.

Ruby was a strong-willed, compassionate, free-spirited being who had a love for all the finer things in life and a passion for her friends and family. She had a lifelong dedication to her Christian belief while holding on to some Diné traditions.

Ruby is survived by her daughters, Sapphira Garner (Gabe Garner) and Tara Oddo; grandsons, Salem, Miloh, and Jaxon Garner; mother, Bessie George; five sisters, seven brothers, and many nieces and nephews.

Ruby will be sorely missed, as her family forever loves her.

WINDSOR, Mo. — Funeral services for Judith Ann “Judy” Hudson, 78, of Calhoun, Missouri, formerly of Kayenta, will be held Friday, Jan. 27, at 1:30 p.m., at the Hadley Funeral Home in Windsor, Missouri. Burial will follow at the Calhoun Cemetery in Calhoun.

Judy was born Sept. 24, 1944, in Clinton, Missouri, to James Albert and Gladys Irene (Vandiver) Young. She passed away Jan. 20, 2023, at the Research Medical Center in Kansas City, Missouri.

On Feb. 10, 1962, Judy married Gary Dean Hudson in Calhoun. Gary preceded her in death on June 3, 2000.

Judy was retired but previously worked as a desk clerk at the Hampton Inn in Kayenta. She was also a bank teller, grocery cashier, and substitute teacher.

Judy enjoyed bowling, fishing, gardening, trail riding, raising livestock, traveling, spending time with family and friends, volunteering at Wednesday Night Bingo at the Kayenta Catholic Church, watching the Kansas City Chiefs play, going to the casino, baking, and making Christmas candy.

Judy is survived by her companion, Russell Hudson; sister, Sharon Church (Dale) of Clinton; sister-in-law, Linda Young of Warsaw, Missouri; daughter, Frances Stevens (Henry) of Navajo Mountain, Utah; and four grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, and numerous relatives and friends.

In addition to her husband Gary, Judy is preceded in death by her son, Donnie Dean Hudson; parents, James Albert Young Sr. and Gladys Irene (Vandiver) Young; brother, James Albert “Jimmie” Young Jr.; and nephew, James Richard Young.

The family will receive friends today, Jan. 26, at Hadley Funeral Home from 5-7 p.m.

SANTA FE — Funeral services for Sam GrayEagle were held Jan. 25 at the Santa Fe National Cemetery with a full military honor guard.

GrayEagle was born July 22, 1951, in Rehoboth, New Mexico, into the Hashtł’ishnii (Mud Clan). He was born for Kiyaa’áanii (Towering House Clan). He departed peacefully Jan. 5, 2023, in Albuquerque.

GrayEagle graduated with a master’s degree in gerontology, business technology, and social sciences. He also developed and coordinated the Navajo Veterans Organization for the Navajo Tribe.

GrayEagle entered the military (U.S. Navy) in 1980 and was honorably discharged in 2008. He was called upon for many conflicts to serve as a reservist for the Navy in the Desert Storm (Endurance Freedom) crisis and was recalled again for the 9/11 attack on United States soil. He loved, served, and protected his country, the United States of America.

LaVerta graduated from the Santa Fe School for the Deaf and attended the Art Institute of Tucson. She enjoyed drawing, watching YouTube, playing games on her phone, reading, and spending time with family and friends.

Vivian attended the medical assistant program at the University of New Mexico and worked for the Women, Infants, and Children office in Fort Defiance. She also worked as a family planner with Indian Health Service in Fort Defiance and as a medical assistant with Indian Health Service in Fort Defiance and Gallup.

Vivian’s interest was jewelry, such as earrings and necklaces.

Vivian is survived by her husband, Glen Young; ex-husband, Steven P. Milford Sr.; son, Shay Milford; daughters, Larissa Wauneka and Stephanie Bryant; brother, Paul Diaz Sr.; and seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Wilson loved tending to his livestock and attending his grandchildren’s birthdays, graduations, and sporting events. He also enjoyed cookouts and watching his favorite TV shows, wrestling, rodeos, and Western movies.

Kendall was a carpenter with B3 Construction, JB Construction, K.T.C., Dixon Builders, and GRC Construction.

Kendall enjoyed fishing, hunting and walking/hiking with his dog and cat. He was also a mechanic who was sociable with neighbors and enjoyed coaching little league teams.

Chris was born July 19,1984, the youngest of three children to Jennifer L. Shelton and the late John B. Harrison Jr. He entered the gates of heaven on Jan. 21, 2023, in Flagstaff, surrounded by his family.

Chris loved the outdoors, camping, swimming, and hiking. He always enjoyed entertaining everyone by playing his guitar downtown and was the life of the party, always making everyone laugh. His love for people was deep, and he was always willing to help in any way possible.

Chris is survived by his mother, Jennifer L. Shelton; brother, Freeman Harrison; sister, Athena Cordova; and stepsister, Melissa Shelton.

Our community sadly lost a pillar on Feb. 4, 2023, when Edith passed away surrounded by loved ones. Her legacy will live on in the lives she touched through her work as a registered nurse, case manager, and hospital supervisor at Northern Navajo Medical Center, where she lovingly served her community for 33 years.

Edith is survived by her husband of 35 years, Raul Martinez Deleon; son, Herman Martinez (Susy Acosta-Martinez); daughters, Tanalia Yazzie (Aaron Harris), Melissa Frank (Retired Sgt. Shondale Lee, U.S. Army), Olivia Deleon (Staff Sgt. Jorge Cazares, U.S. Air Force/Cpl. U.S. Marine Corps), and Samara Deleon; sisters, Margaret Benally, Eva Henagarne and Lora Benally; and six grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews who she loved dearly.

GALLUP — Gravesite service for Betty H. Yazzie, 91, of China Springs, New Mexico, will be held Tuesday, Feb. 21, at 10 a.m., at the Sunset Cemetery in Gallup, with Father David officiating.

Betty was born Feb. 15, 1932, in Twin Lakes, New Mexico, into the Naakai Dine’é (Mexican Clan). She was born for Tsi’naajinii (Black Streak Wood People Clan). She passed away Feb. 12, 2023, in Gallup.

Betty had a fifth-grade education and was a self-employed rug weaver. She loved to sew and watch sports and wrestling.

Betty is survived by her sons, William Douglas, Robert Douglas, Dexler Shorty, and DeWayne Tsinnajinnie; daughters, Evelyn Morgan, LaVerne White, Tina Yazzie, and Irene Hoskie; parents, Ellen and Frank Yazzie; brothers, John K. Yazzie, Lee K. Yazzie, Ben K. Yazzie, and Benson K. Yazzie; and 28 grandchildren and 39 great-grandchildren.

Betty is preceded in death by her husband, Richard H. Yazzie; daughter, Phyllis G. Kee; and grandson, Jason Morgan.

Pallbearers will be Jimmie Kee Jr., Jerry Kee, Dennison Hoskie, DeWayne Tsinnijinnie, Dexler Shorty, and William Douglas.

GALLUP — Funeral services for James Lane Touchin, 82, of St. Michaels, Arizona, will be held today, Feb. 16, at 11 a.m., at the Sacred Heart Cathedral in Gallup. Burial will follow at the St. Michaels community cemetery.

James was born July 4, 1940, in Coppermine, Arizona, into the Tł’ízí lání (Many Goats Clan). He was born for Bįįh Bitoodnii (Deer Spring Clan). His nalí is Kinyaa’áanii (Towering House); cheii is Táchii’nii (Red Running Into the Water People). He passed away Feb. 10, 2023, in Winslow, Arizona.

James worked for the Navajo Nation Printing Department, Navajo Times, Navajo Housing Authority, PHS Support Center, and Navajoland Days Inn. He loved animals and enjoyed rodeos, bull riding, jogging, hiking, camping, carpentry, traveling, and watching the Phoenix Suns and Arizona Cardinals play.

James is survived by his wife, Arlene Touchin; children, Jason Touchin, Jewel Touchin, Jolene Morton, Yolanda Touchin, and Jared Touchin; sisters, Sue Sandoval, Patty Etcitty, Ilene Begay, Leona Yazzie, Priscilla Begay, and Jane Austin; brothers, Charlie Touchin and Julius Touchin; and three grandchildren.

James is preceded in death by his mother, Alma Touchin; father, Kenneth Touchin Sr.; brothers, John Lane, Rex Lane, Kenny Touchin, and David Touchin; and sister, Mary Begay.

PAGE, Ariz. — A Celebration of Life for Rev. Warren K. Fuller Jr. will be held Saturday, Feb. 18, at 11 a.m., at the First Baptist Church of Page in Page, Arizona. Burial will follow at Page City Cemetery.

Rev. Fuller went to be with the Lord on Feb. 12, 2023. He lived a long, blessed life to age 90.

Rev. Fuller was the proud son of the late Warren Sr. and Nancy Dayzie Fuller of the Shonto/Tall Mountain area. He had six brothers (Tommy, Steven Sr., the late Byron, Jimmy, and two brothers who did not live beyond infancy) and seven sisters (the late Ruby Salt, the late Pauline Todacheene, Delma Black, the late Susan Gilmore, Betty Bennett, Gaynelle Harris, and Anna Charley.

As the eldest son, Rev. Fuller’s sole responsibility for most of his childhood and teen years was tending to the family livestock. During his late teens, he left to attend Sherman Institute in Riverside, California, where he met his future wife, Bessie (Ahkeah) Fuller.

The couple started a family in California and attended Indian Revival Center in Bell Gardens, California, where he taught Sunday School in the Navajo language to Navajos who resided in the area. At the time, hearing God’s word in Navajo in the city was uncommon and filled a void for many urban Navajos who missed home and family.

In the late 60s, the couple moved their growing family to Phoenix, where he taught an adult Navajo Bible Class at All Tribes A/G Church in Phoenix.

In the mid-80s, the couple moved their family back to the reservation. God called Rev. Fuller to plant two churches, Coppermine Full Gospel Church in Coppermine, Arizona, and Rainbow City A/G Church, in Navajo Mountain, where he pioneered the church for over 37 years. His love for the community that he served was immense.

Upon retirement, Rev. Fuller focused on ranching with his sons. They raised a herd of cattle in the Tall Mountain area (Horsespring) near where he grew up. Being among the quietness and solitude of his homeland brought him much happiness.

Rev. Fuller is survived by his beloved wife, Bessie; children, Harold, Darlene, David (Renee), Diane, and Daniel (Christy); and four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

FORT DEFIANCE — Gravesite service for Carol Ann Slinkey, 66, of Fort Defiance, was held Feb. 3 in Fort Defiance, with Father Edgardo Diaz officiating.

Carol was born Dec. 25, 1956, in Rehoboth, New Mexico, into the Táchii’nii (Red Running Into the Water People Clan), born for Honágháahnii (One-walks-around Clan). She passed away Jan. 31, 2023, in Fort Defiance.

Carol attended Window Rock High School, Ganado High School, the University of New Mexico-Gallup, and Southwestern Indian Polytechnic Institute in Albuquerque. She worked for Child Care Development at UNM-G, Good Shepherd Mission in Fort Defiance, and was a K-5 religious educator at Our Lady of the Blessed Sacrament in Fort Defiance.

Carol loved to travel the country with family and visit other family members. She was a dedicated New England Patriots fan and a loyal World Wrestling Entertainment fan.

Carol is survived by her husband, Alex M. Slinkey; sons, Steve M. Slinkey and Keith S. Slinkey; brothers, Larry Foster, Melvin Foster Sr., David Foster, and Harold Shirley; sisters, Katherine Arviso and Mary Tom; grandparents, William Day and Helen Day Chee, and Fred and Mary Foster; and 50 grandchildren.

Carol is preceded in death by her parents, Larry and Hazel Foster, and Glenna Foster Smith.

Pallbearers were Keith Slinkey, Irvin Foster, Irwin Foster, Jesse Yazzie, Charles Coleman, and Irvin Wauneka Jr.

FORT DEFIANCE — A Celebration of Life for Mary Louise Hanley (Knapp), 89, of Window Rock, will be held Monday, Feb. 27, at noon, at the Fort Defiance Presbyterian Church.

Mary was born Aug. 18, 1933, in Franklinville, New York. She gained her angel wings in the morning of Feb. 19, 2023, in Albuquerque.

Mary was a registered nurse who worked with the Indian Health Service for 35 years, retiring from Fort Defiance Indian Hospital. She graduated from nursing school in Buffalo, New York.

Upon graduation, she and a fellow nursing friend took a road trip to Tuba City, where compassionate qualified nurses were in need. It was there that she met and married her best friend and husband of 64 years in 1958.

Upon retirement, Mary enjoyed the company of her four children, seven grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, and three great-great grandchildren. Her long-lasting drive to deeply impact others positively didn’t stop in the comfort of her home. She loved seeing her family laugh and have peace with each other. Family was arguably the most important achievement in her life. All who knew Mary know the safest place on earth was next to her.

Those of us who were blessed to be touched by her, understand that her existence and the imprint she left on our hearts exceed the quantity of time that she stayed here. Mary was a devoted wife, mother, sister, and grandmother.

Mary is survived by her loving husband, Wallace Hanley; children, Michael Hanley and Gail Hanley; sister, Jean Frank of Olean, New York; and many grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.

Mary is preceded in death by her mother, Ruth Wilson; father, William Knapp; stepfather, Harry Wilson; brothers, Don Knapp, Roy Knapp and William Duncan Knapp; and daughters, Kim Hanley and Carla Marques.

Pauline was born May 7, 1933, in Klagetoh, into the Bit’ahnii (Under His Cover Clan), born for Tsi’naajinii (Black Streak Wood People Clan). Her nálí is ‘Áshįįhí (Salt People). She passed away Feb. 26, 2023, in Fort Defiance.

Pauline attended Fort Wingate School and was a 1954 graduate of Riverside Indian School in Anadarko, Oklahoma. She was employed and retired from the Bureau of Indian Affairs in Klagetoh, Toyei, and Greasewood, Arizona.

Pauline enjoyed sewing, quilting, plastic canvas crafts, beadwork, puzzles, word-find puzzles, watching rodeos and old Western movies, and crocheting, but most of all, she loved being in the presence of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren whom she loved very much.

Pauline is survived by her sons, Richard (Vergina) Clarke and Glenn Clarke; daughters, Yvonne Toledo, Lula (Darryl) Billy, Marci Clarke, Lottie Clarke (Wilson Lopez), and Juliana Clark; brothers, Tom Tsinnajinnie, Bob Tsinnajinnie, and Leonard Tsinnajinnie Jr.; sisters, Anita Tsinnajinnie, Mary T. Cohoe, Lenora Tsinnajinnie, and Ann Yazzie; and 23 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren.

Pauline is preceded in death by her husband, James Clarke Sr.; parents, Lily Nez and Leonard Tsinnajinnie; stepmother, Iola Tsinajinnie; brothers, Leo Tsinajinnie, Chester Tsinajinnie, and Albert Yazzie Regis; sons, Steven James Clarke and James Clarke Jr.; granddaughter, Jessica Peterson; and grandsons, Kyle Ryan Clarke and Eric Billy.

Sister Jeanette was born Feb. 12, 1940, in Ganado, Arizona, into the Tótsohnii (Big Water Clan), born for Kinyaa’áanii (Towering House Clan). Her nálí is Kinłichíi’nii (Red House People); cheii is Kinyaa’áanii. She passed away Feb. 23, 2023, in Bensalem, Pennsylvania.

Sister Jeanette attended school in St. Michaels, Poston Public in Parker, Arizona, St. Johns, and Laveen, Arizona. She then attended Loyola University in Los Angeles and the University of San Francisco, California.

Sister Jeanette worked at San Antonio De Pala in Pala, California, St. Michael School, St. Charles School in San Carlos, California, and St. Catherine School in Santa Fe.

Sister Jeanette enjoyed reading, music, traveling, outdoor adventures, homebound visits, and spending time with her nieces and nephews.

Caleb received a bachelor’s in education from the University of Arizona, and a master’s in education from Northern Arizona University.

LITTLEWATER, N.M. — Sarah Farley, of Littlewater, New Mexico, was born Aug. 26, 1957, to the late Paul and Helen Manygoats. Her clans are Hooghan Łání (Many Hogans Clan), born for Tsenabahiłnii (Sleep Rock People Clan). Her nalí is Naashaashí (Bear Clan); cheii is Táchii’nii (Red Running Into the Water People). She passed away Feb. 23, 2023.

Sarah was a loving sister, wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother.

Sarah started school at Newcomb Elementary from kindergarten through 8th grade and graduated from Shiprock High School in 1976. She then attended San Juan College for two years.

Sarah worked with Central Consolidated School District at Nataani Nez Elementary and Nizhoni Elementary School. She worked 34 years for the schools, retiring in 2014.

Sarah had many hobbies and was very creative. She wove many rugs, including orders for rug dresses, purses, coin purses, and pictorial rugs.

Sarah is survived by her husband, Gilbert Farley; children, Pamela Brown (Raleigh), Delana Joy Farley (Arlando), and Roland Farley (Shauntai); brothers, George Manygoats (Sarah) and Pete Manygoats; sisters, Elsie Yazzie (Richard), Nora Manygoats (Leonard) and Rita Manygoats; and three grandchildren, one great-grandson and numerous nephews, nieces, and grandchildren.

Sarah is preceded in death by her parents, Paul and Helen Manygoats; and brothers, Harrison and Lester Manygoats.

TAOS, N.M. — Funeral services for Lillian L. Lujan will be held today, Mar. 9, from 3-7 p.m., at Rivera’s Family Funeral Home in Taos, New Mexico. Military burial honors will follow on Friday, Mar. 10, from 10:30-11:30 a.m., at the Santa Fe National Veterans Cemetery.

Lillian was a 104-year-old proud Diné woman of the ‘Áshįįhí (Salt People Clan) from Coalmine, Arizona, born for Naasht’ézhí Tábąąhá (Zuni Water’s Edge Clan) in the winter of 1918. She passed away peacefully Mar. 6, 2023, at her home in Taos Pueblo.

Lillian attended Albuquerque Indian School and New Mexico Highlands University-Las Vegas. After graduation, she enlisted in the Women’s Army Corps on Jan. 28, 1943, and served as a sergeant in the Detachment 3809 Service Command Unit. She was honorably discharged on Dec. 4, 1945, after World War II ended.

Once World War II ended, Lillian married Jimmy K. Lujan Sr. (U.S. Bataan Death March survivor) and had four children. She worked throughout the Navajo Nation with the Bureau of Indian Affairs aiding in job placement, teaching home economics, and helping with local 4-H Club functions.

Lillian was an occupational counselor stationed in Gallup, Tulsa, Oklahoma, and Fort Sam in Houston, Texas. Medals awarded during her service include Good Conduct Medal, the Victory Ribbon, American Theater Campaign Medal, and WAC Ribbon.

Lillian is survived by her son, Jimmy K. Lujan Jr., and his wife, Lucy M. Lujan of Fruitland, New Mexico; and daughters, Marilyn L. Atcitty of Flagstaff and Karilyn L. Haozous of Albuquerque.

Lillian is preceded in death by her husband, Jimmy K. Lujan Sr.; parents, Mr. and Mrs. Charlie Young; and son, Jeffery E. Lujan.

The family of Lillian would like to thank the Navajo Nation Women’s Color Guard and the State of New Mexico for recognizing our mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and great-great-grandmother for her military service.

Leoma was born Feb. 9, 1965, in Glendale, California, into the ‘Áshįįhí (Salt People Clan), born for Honágháahnii (One-walks-around Clan). She passed away Mar. 5, 2023, in Flagstaff.

Leoma attended the Tohatchi Area Office of Special Education and worked for the Hozhoni Foundation and the Tohatchi Area Office of Special Education. She enjoyed bowling, arts and crafts, crossword puzzles, and the Special Olympics.

Leoma is survived by her brothers, Troy Chester, Dion Chester, and Shane Chester; sister, Arnie Sarracino; and four grandchildren.

Leoma is preceded in death by her parents, Lee Chester and Alice Bryant; maternal grandmother, Emily Johnson; and paternal grandparents, Ramona and Francis Chester.

Caleb received a bachelor’s in education from the University of Arizona, and a master’s in education from Northern Arizona University.

Caleb had a lifelong career in the following Navajo Nation education and government leadership positions: Ganado Unified School District Board president, Cornfields Chapter president, vice president, secretary/treasurer, and president of Dineland Senior Rodeo Association.

Caleb enjoyed riding horses and traveling.

Caleb is survived by his wife, Bertha Aguirre; sons, Shane Roanhorse and Sherrick Roanhorse; daughters, Sharilyn Roanhorse-Aguilar and Kylie Roanhorse; and two grandchildren.

Mabel was a homemaker who attended Sherman Indian School in Riverside, California. She enjoyed crocheting, listening to gospel songs, praying daily, and reading the bible.

Mabel is survived by her husband, Lee Pino; son, Tom Toadecheenie; daughters, Amy Johnson, Freda Jinnity, and Sharon Toadecheenie; brother, Tony Livingston; sisters, Bessie T. Nez, Annie Caballero, and Flora Toadecheenie; and 23 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.

Mabel is preceded in death by her son, Marcello S. Lee; brother, George Livingston; sister, Glady T. Chee; and grandson, Joel S. Lee.

Lorenzo was born Jul. 4, 1933, in Oljato, Utah, into the Táchii’nii (Red Running Into the Water People Clan), born for Tódích’íi’nii (Bitter Water Clan). His nalí is Bit’ahnii (His Sheaves); cheii is ‘Áshįįhí (Salt People). He gained his angel wings on the evening of Feb. 23, 2023, in Seba Dalkai.

Lorenzo began working for Santa Fe Railroads (BNSF) when he was 17 and worked there for 41 years, retiring as a machine operator for the Extra Gang.

Upon retirement, Lorenzo enjoyed fishing and traveling with his beloved wife Helen and loved the company of his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. He encouraged education, self-respect, and, most importantly, achievement in their lives.

During his younger years, Lorenzo’s hobbies were being a self-taught mechanic, hunting games, and butchering. He did some acting jobs as an extra with John Wayne in Monument Valley, which he often talked and laughed about.

Lorenzo was also a strong Christian man, a gentleman of Christ.

PARKER, Ariz. — Funeral services for Michael Nez, 76, of Parker, Arizona, will be held Saturday, Mar. 11, at the Sacred Heart Church in Parker.

Michael was born in Albuquerque, the second son of Nathaniel and Winifred Nez, into the Mą’ii deeshgiizhinii (Coyote Pass Clan), born for Tábąąhá (Water’s Edge Clan). He departed from us Mar. 1, 2023, in Parker.

Michael graduated from St. Michaels Indian School and Northern Arizona University, receiving his bachelor’s in police science. While attending NAU, he worked for

NAU Security and also for the Flagstaff Police Department.

After Michael graduated from NAU, he was employed with the Navajo Tribal Police Department in Window Rock. He later joined the Federal Bureau of Investigation as a special agent.

Michael is survived by his siblings, Nathaniel Nez Jr. and Rosalie Gould; children, Natalie Wilber, Chris Nez, and Kelly Nez; and seven grandchildren.

Michael is preceded in death by his parents, Nathaniel and Winifred Nez.

Pallbearers will be Peyton and Kai Wilbur, Shotah and Ohiyesa Miller, Travis Nez, and Cisco and Abram Caudras.

Arnold was born Apr. 20, 1958, in Fort Defiance, into the Naakai dine’é (Mexican Clan), born for Kiyaa’áanii (Towering House Clan). He passed away Feb. 26, 2023, in Albuquerque.

Arnold attended Gallup High School and received certification as a journey carpenter apprentice from the Carpenters Union Local 1319. He worked for Burlington Northern Railroad as a machine operator, journeyman carpenter, truck driver, Intel Corporation, Sandia National Labs, and Los Alamos National Labs.

Arnold enjoyed being an automotive mechanic, cooking, carpentry, attending National Hot Rod Association races, and target shooting.

Arnold is survived by his wife, Lolita Grace Skeets; sons, Cordero Castillo, Arnold Skeets Jr., Nathan Bitahey, and Johnny Bitahey Jr.; daughters, Roxanna Skeets and Stacey H. Enriquez; brothers, Raymond Skeets and Anderson Skeets; sisters, Susie Tom, Elsie Johnson, and Rhoda Johnson; and five grandchildren.

Cecelia was born Nov. 30, 1950, in Fort Defiance, into the Tódích’íi’nii (Bitter Water Clan). Her nalí is Tótsohnii (Big Water Clan); cheii is Naakai dine’é (Mexican Clan). She passed away Feb. 21, 2023, in Albuquerque.

Cecelia received a bachelor’s in education and was a teacher at Tséhootsooí Middle School.

Cecelia is survived by her children, Jessie Bitsuie and Ronald Bydonie; siblings, Guy Hoskie, Jimmy Hoskie, Darlene Bydonie, Robert Hoskie Jr., and Rose Hoskie; and eight grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.

Lucille, who enjoyed sewing, was born Jun. 29, 1964, in Gallup, into the Dziłtł’ahnii (Mountain Cove Clan), born for Tó baazhní’ázhí (Two Who Came to the Water Clan). She passed away Feb. 21, 2023, in Gallup.

Lucille is survived by her daughter, Gabi Martinez; and brothers, Jimmy Bitloy and Roy Bitloy.

Lucille is preceded in death by her parents, Annie and Jay Saunders; sister, Lucille Jeanne Saunders; brothers, Willie Smith and Henry Bitloy; and grandparents, Ellen and Jimmy Saunders.

Gloria was born Feb. 5, 1965, in Rehoboth, New Mexico, into the Haltsooí (Meadow People Clan), born for Naaneesht’ézhi Táchii’nii (The Charcoal Streaked Division of the Red Running Into the Water Clan). She passed away Mar. 3, 2023, in Albuquerque.

Gloria attended Wingate High School and was employed at the El Rancho Hotel. She enjoyed traveling, singing, and spending time with her grandchildren.

Gloria is survived by her son, Travis Touchine of Church Rock; daughters, Rosanna Kay and Hilary Touchine, both of Church Rock; mother, Pastor Mary R. Johnson of Church Rock; brother, Thompson Jones Jr. of Church Rock; and eight grandchildren.

Gloria is preceded in death by her sons, Harven “Bam” Touchine and Mike Touchine; sister, Beulah J. Jones; and grandparents, Ned and Mae Johnson and Pastor Lena Brown.

GALLUP — George M. “Gregg” Angle Jr., 73, formerly of Madison, Wisconsin, and Gallup, went to be with his Lord and Savior on Feb. 25, 2023.

Gregg was a lifelong teacher in elementary schools in the Madison and Gallup areas. His humor and love for his students built special connections which endure with his memory.

Gregg’s love of music was embedded into every facet of his life. He used that passion for expanding the minds of his students, and it was the canvas for many life experiences shared with his family and friends.

Whether it was a joke, a perfectly timed pun, or an encyclopedia of useless information, Gregg made everyone he met smile, laugh, roll their eyes, or even groan.

Gregg’s level of fandom for the Green Bay Packers was legendary. If someone could bleed green and gold or gain the “Ultimate Cheesehead” title, it would be him.

Gregg is survived by his wife, Jenifer; children, Katy, Andrew, and Liz; brothers, Tim and Nick; sister, VeeVee; and four grandchildren.

Funeral services and burial will be private.

TOHATCHI, N.M. — Funeral services for Alice S. Benallie, 102, of Tohatchi, New Mexico, were held March 13 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Tohatchi, with Father Dale Jamison officiating. Interment followed at the Tohatchi cemetery.

Alice was born Aug. 12, 1920, in Tohatchi, into the Tsin sikaadnii (Clamp Tree Clan), born for ‘Áshįįhí (Salt People Clan). She passed away March 9, 2023, in Farmington.

Alice attended Fort Wingate High School, worked for ONEO-District 14, Fort Wingate Army Depot, and St. Mary’s Hospital, and was a secretary at Tohatchi Chapter.

Alice was a Gold Star mother who loved weaving rugs, ranching, silversmithing, and spending time with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

Alice is survived by her sons, David Benallie, Ickes Benallie, Dennis Benallie, and Angelo Benallie; daughters, Mildred Morris, Doris Benallie, JoAnn Crosby, and Valentina Benallie; brother, Willie Sandoval; and 22 grandchildren and 38 great-grandchildren.

Alice is preceded in death by her husband, a World War II veteran, Ike Benallie; sons, Ambrose Sandoval and Gary Benallie; sister, Louise Etsitty; brothers, Leo Sandoval and Thomas Sandoval; and grandson, Dwayne Morris.

Tawni was born March 2, 1960, in Denver, Colorado. She passed away March 10, 2023, in Gamerco.

Tawni graduated from Tohatchi High School and earned a bachelor’s in education from the University of New Mexico-Gallup. She worked for Tohatchi Middle School as a library aide and for Kennedy Middle School as a secretary and teacher.

Tawni enjoyed puzzles, crafts, and attending concerts with her children.

Tawni is survived by her son, Adam Etsitty; daughter, Kayleigh Crowe; parents, Beverly and Dale Crowe; brother, Kurt Crowe; sister, Kimber Crowe; and two grandchildren.

Henry was born Dec. 24, 1931, in Gadii’ahi/To’Koi, New Mexico, into the ‘Oozéí Táchii’nii (Red Running Into the Water People Clan), born for ‘Áshįįhí (Salt People Clan). He passed away March 8, 2023, in Shiprock.

Henry became a Window Rock Methodist Church pastor in 1980, retiring in 1996. He enjoyed playing the guitar and piano and spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Henry is survived by his wife of 66 years, Jean Mary Begay; children, Nelson C. Begay, Franklin G. (Nora) Ellison, Herman C. Begaye, Diana J. Cudeii (Craig Bruce), Lois J. Westbrook, Norman C. (Linda) Bennett-Begaye, Velala J.C. (Matthew) White, Tommy C. (Stacey) Begay, Jethro C. Begay (Dinah Lewis), and Verlena J. (John) Livingston; sister, RoseAnn Nelson; and 19 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.

Henry is preceded in death by his mother, Mary Nelson; father, Clarence C. Begay; brother, John C. Begay; and daughter, Carrie Begay.

ST. MICHAELS, Ariz. — Funeral services for Herman James Tabaha, 65, of Crystal, New Mexico, will be held today, March 16, at 10 a.m., at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in St. Michaels, Arizona, with Bishop Smith officiating. Burial will follow in Fort Defiance.
Herman was born July 6, 1956, in Blythe, California, into the Hashk’ąą hadzohí (Yucca Fruit-Strung-Out-In-A-Line Clan), born for Tábąąhá (Water’s Edge Clan). He passed away March 11, 2023, in Wildcat, New Mexico.

Herman graduated from Wingate High School and attended Southwestern Indian Polytechnic Institute, Diné College, and the University of New Mexico-Gallup. He was an accountant technician with the Navajo Nation and Navajo Housing Authority.

Herman’s interests and hobbies included martial arts, horsemanship skills, and sponsoring basketball tournaments. He was also a bull rider in the Indian rodeo circuit.

Herman is survived by his children, Kris Tabaha, Jamie Tabaha, Dallas Tabaha, Christine Tabaha, and Shirleen Tabaha; siblings, Lynda Tabaha-Yazzie, Flavian Tabaha Jr., LaVerne Johnson, Priscilla Francisco, and Victoria Selestewa; and five grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Herman is preceded in death by Shirley Francisco, Flavian Tabaha Sr., and Leslie Francisco.

Pallbearers will be Jamie Tabaha, Barren Yazzie and Reuben Selestewa.

Following services, a reception will occur at The Family Church Assembly of God in Fort Defiance.

Margaret M. Gorman

FORT DEFIANCE — Memorial service for Margaret M. Gorman of Window Rock will be held Saturday, March 18, at noon, at the Presbyterian Church in Fort Defiance.

Margaret was born May 7, 1936, in Klagetoh, Arizona, to Joseph Elwood Lee and Anna Tracy Lee, into the Deeshchii’nii (Start of the Red Streak People Clan), born for the Honágháahnii (One-walks-around Clan). She passed away March 1, 2023.

Margaret grew up in Cornfields, Arizona, and attended Ganado Mission School. She graduated in 1958 and attended nursing school at Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas. After graduating from nursing school, she worked briefly at the Los Angeles Medical Center and Lovelace Hospital in Albuquerque.

Margaret married Howard Thomas Gorman in 1962 and continued her work as a school nurse in Chinle in the late 1960s. In 1973, she began work at the Fort Defiance Indian Hospital, where she gained experience working in different areas of nursing — inpatient ward, surgical, nursing administration, emergency room, and patient advocate until her retirement in 2006.

After retirement, Margaret led a quiet life at home. She enjoyed reading, doing word puzzles, watching old Western movies and television shows (Gunsmoke was a favorite program), shopping, and spending time with her family and dogs.

Margaret is survived by her daughter, Lenora Gorman; sisters, Evelyn McCabe and Phoebe Lynch; brother, Henry Lee; granddaughters, Rachel Gorman and Morgan Littleman; and seven great-grandchildren and 22 nieces and nephews.

Margaret is preceded in death by her husband, Tom Gorman, who passed in 1990, and son, Curtis Gorman, who passed in 2017.

Margaret wished to be cremated and buried with her husband, Tom, in Ganado, Arizona.

A reception will take place at the Presbyterian Church following the service.

Edith M. Gleason

NEWCOMB, N.M. — Graveside service for Edith M. Gleason, 78, of Mexican Springs, New Mexico, will be held Saturday, March 18, at 10 a.m., at the Gleason family plot in Newcomb, New Mexico, with Harry Plummer officiating.

Edith was born May 16, 1944, in Gallup, into the Tódích’íi’nii (Bitter Water Clan), born for ‘Áshįįhí (Salt People Clan). She passed away March 10, 2023, in Gallup.

Edith attended Gallup High School and earned a certificate in auto mechanics. She worked for McKinley County Income Support Division and retired from General Dynamics in Fort Defiance.

Edith enjoyed quilting NFL teams and area high schools, cooking, beadwork, word search, and weaving Navajo rugs and sash belts. She was a rancher who always smiled and loved helping her grandchildren with math and helping others.

Edith is survived by her sons, VcRay (Caroline) of Phoenix, Zolton (Yvette) of Mesa, Arizona, and Zach of Tohatchi, New Mexico; daughters, Berdie (Virgil Sam) of Mexican Springs and Elvira Gleason-Hubbard of Mexican Springs; brothers, Lyman Kinsel and Paul Kinsel Jr., both of Tohatchi; sister, Clara Kinsel of Tohatchi; and 12 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.

Edith is preceded in death by her husband, Tsosie R. Gleason; son, Ronnie Gleason; sister, Sissy Miller; grandson, Jeremy Gleason; parents, Mary and Paul Kinsel; and grandparents, Marie and Dewy Etsitty.
